The University of Indonesia (UI) has begun talks with Mexico to strengthen academic collaboration and expand global learning opportunities. The discussion took place during a visit by the Mexican Ambassador to Indonesia, Francisco “Paco” de la Torre Galindo, at UI’s Depok campus.
UI Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Mahmud Sudibandriyo, said the university is open to working with international partners to improve education quality and student outcomes. He noted that global cooperation helps universities build stronger academic programs, practical skills, and research impact.
The Mexican Ambassador said education can act as a bridge between the two countries. He explained that his visit aimed to connect universities and support long-term cooperation in teaching, research, and student exchange.
A key focus of the discussion was the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico’s largest public university. UNAM has shown strong interest in forming a strategic partnership with UI. The collaboration may involve UNAM’s specialized unit, PUEAAO, which studies Asia, Africa, and Oceania. This focus closely matches UI’s strength in regional and global studies.
The Ambassador also proposed cooperation with UNAM’s branch campus in Beijing. This could give UI access to a wider academic network in East Asia and open doors for joint research, academic mobility, and skill-based programs.

In addition, two other Mexican institutions were introduced as potential partners, El Colegio de México (ColMex) and Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL). Both universities run research centers focused on Asia and Africa.
UI sees these partnerships as opportunities to support student skills, academic research, and global career pathways through international education collaboration.
