UK-Malaysia Forge Stronger Bonds via Education and Innovation

    • UK Minister Seema Malhotra visits Malaysia to reinforce the UK’s commitment to global education partnerships.
    • Special address at Sunway University, ‘Future Forward: UK-Malaysia Connections That Shape Tomorrow’, highlighted students as central to international collaboration.
    • Strengthening UK-Malaysia educational links, including Lancaster-Sunway double degrees and Sunway schools’ partnership with Magdalen College School Oxford.

    Seema Malhotra MP, the United Kingdom's Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Indo-Pacific and Minister for Equalities, also visited Malaysia recently in an attempt to reassert the UK's dedication to deepening global education partnerships.

    During her visit, she also gave a special address at Sunway University entitled 'Future Forward: UK-Malaysia Connections That Shape Tomorrow'. The event, jointly organized by the British Council and British High Commission in Malaysia, gathered together students, scholars, and thinkers to explore the future of UK-Malaysia collaborative education, research, and innovation.

    Malhotra, in her speech, spoke about the central position of education and global alliances in propelling development, citing students as the cornerstone of global partnerships. She added that these engagements not only strengthen academic links but also develop intercultural understanding and common values among countries.
    Sunway University President and Vice Chancellor Professor Sibrandes Poppema spoke of pride in hosting Malhotra on her first visit to Malaysia. He stated that her visit highlights the centuries-old bond between Malaysia and the United Kingdom, especially in education.

    The visit underscored efforts to strengthen UK-Malaysia educational links, such as the 19-year partnership between Lancaster University and Sunway University.
    This collaboration enables students to receive double degree awards and facilitates collaborative research via the Future Cities Research Institute.

    Further, Sunway International Schools have recently established partnership with Magdalen College School (MCS) Oxford, offering the Cambridge International Programmes to students in Malaysia and opening doors to the world's best universities, including Oxbridge and the Ivy League. Malhotra's visit serves to reinforce the UK's dedication to developing international education partnerships and to support the significance of these partnerships in determining future global education.
