The University of Helsinki has signed a collaborative agreement with Yonsei University during a visit by Rector Sari Lindblom to South Korea in September. This agreement marks a significant step in the University of Helsinki's new global program, which aims to enhance cooperation with the Indo-Pacific region, with a particular focus on South Korea and Japan.
"The agreement signed now is an important first step in our collaboration with Yonsei University", said Rector Lindblom. She further highlighted ongoing discussions for a deeper strategic partnership between the two institutions, emphasizing the importance of building robust academic ties.
As South Korea prepares to join the EU’s research and innovation framework program, Horizon Europe, in 2025, the partnership opens up new opportunities for joint research and innovation projects between European and Korean universities. Vice-Rector Hanna Snellman, responsible for International Affairs, noted, "The University of Helsinki has strong European connections through alliances like Una Europa and the League of European Research Universities (LERU). We can also act as a bridge between Korean and European universities to promote our strong research fields".
During her visit, Rector Lindblom also met with leaders from Seoul National University and Korea University, discussing the potential for intensified cooperation and the opportunities presented by Horizon Europe. The discussions culminated at a reception hosted by the Embassy of Finland in Seoul, where Ambassador Jyri Jarviaho underscored the vital role of university collaboration in addressing major global challenges, stating, "Collaboration enhances our understanding of problems and helps us discover solutions".
