GEMS Education, one of the world’s oldest and largest private K-12 education providers, has unveiled GR8 School, a global-first model that fuses hyper-personalised AI-powered learning with specially trained teachers and real-world industry expertise. The announcement, made on 8 October 2026, marks a significant step in reimagining how students learn in an era of rapid technological and workplace change.
The new model will initially operate as a “school within a school,” offering a distinct pathway inside existing GEMS campuses rather than launching as a standalone institution. A soft launch is planned for January 2027, giving the organisation time to refine its learning technology, academic framework, teacher training and network of specialist partners.
At the heart of GR8 School are three interconnected pillars. First, hyper-personalised AI-powered learning allows students to progress through core academic material at their own pace. The adaptive system continuously assesses mastery, identifies gaps and raises the level of challenge when students are ready, removing the traditional constraint of a fixed class timetable.
Second, specially trained teachers described as human mentors shift their role from whole-class instruction to high-impact one-to-one support. Real-time data from the AI platform frees teachers to focus on academic rigour, practical application, inspiration and the human connection that remains central to a child’s development.
Third, individualised real-world pathways connect each student’s interests and ambitions to specialists, industry practitioners, projects and experiences. The model deliberately builds skills such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, financial literacy and practical life skills, creating clearer bridges from school to further study, entrepreneurship or employment.
The daily structure reflects this flexibility. Students combine asynchronous, self-paced AI study with roughly 90 minutes to two hours of synchronous, teacher-led learning supported by external experts. An additional two to three hours are dedicated to enhanced enrichment programmes that deepen specialist knowledge, practical projects, collaboration, creativity, sport and the arts.
“For almost seven decades, we have evolved continually because the world our children are growing into keeps evolving,” said Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education. “Throughout that journey one thing has never changed: the teacher has remained at the heart of a child’s learning and growth. A teacher provides inspiration, encouragement, judgement and human connection. That relationship remains fundamental.
“Today, artificial intelligence is changing how we learn and work, but the answer cannot simply be to put more technology into classrooms. We have to ask a bigger question: if we were designing education for young people today, knowing how rapidly the world around them is changing, what would we do differently?
“GR8 is our answer to that question. It starts with the individual child and asks what combination of technology, great teachers, industry experts and real-industry experiences will help that young person achieve academically and discover what they could become.”
Varkey emphasised that GR8 is not designed for every student. The pathway will be available across GEMS schools and price points, but it is expected to appeal most to learners ready for greater independence, personalisation and ownership of their education. Indicative annual fees range from approximately US$8,000-10,000 for more affordable offerings to US$20,000-40,000 for premium options, with final pricing to be confirmed closer to launch.
GEMS brings substantial scale and experience to the initiative. Founded in the UAE with roots dating to 1959, the organisation today educates more than 200,000 students from over 176 nationalities and employs more than 17,700 staff, including over 10,000 educators. Its alumni number more than 500,000 and include entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers, scientists and leaders. In recent years GEMS graduates have gained places at more than 2,000 universities across 71 countries, including all eight Ivy League institutions and all 24 Russell Group universities.

GR8 builds on principles already present across the GEMS network personalised support, strong teacher-student relationships, character development and learning beyond the classroom while concentrating them into a more structured and flexible model. The organisation positions the launch as a response both to Dubai’s interest in new educational approaches and to the broader question of how schools can better prepare young people for a changing world of work.
Further details on curriculum specifics, technology partners, teacher training programmes and exact school locations will be released closer to the January 2027 soft launch. For families seeking a more independent, personalised and future-oriented education pathway, GR8 School represents one of the most ambitious experiments yet in combining artificial intelligence with human mentorship and real-world experience.
