Hong Kong is poised to advance its educational landscape with the inaugural Digital Education Week (DEW), a landmark event scheduled from June 30 to July 7, 2025. This initiative, a collaboration between the Education Bureau (EDB) and Hong Kong Education City (EdCity), aims to spearhead the integration of cutting-edge technologies, like artificial intelligence (AI), to cultivate future-ready talent.
The week-long event will merge two major happenings: the Learning & Teaching Expo (LTE) and the International Summit on the Use of AI in Learning and Teaching Languages and Other Subjects & Post-Summit Workshop Series (AIinLT). Participants can expect a comprehensive program featuring a large-scale expo, a summit for education leaders, a conference for principals, and practical teaching workshops.
At the announcement, Edith Tse, Principal Assistant Secretary (Curriculum Support) at the EDB, highlighted the event's significance. “Strengthening digital education is a vital component of implementing the national strategy to invigorate the country through science, education, and talent development”, Tse stated. She emphasized that Digital Education Week is a crucial step in Hong Kong's digital transformation, aligning with the 2024 Policy Address.
The initiative seeks to equip young people with essential skills for the future by embedding AI and other innovative technologies within the education system. The EDB and EdCity are encouraging schools, teachers, students, and parents to participate and collectively shape the future of learning.
A flagship event during the week is the LTE 2025, the Learning and Teaching Expo, which has been a significant education stakeholder platform for the past 15 years. In terms of the theme, the expo will carry the theme 'Shaping Education Together, Creating the Future' and introduce new features and enhance collaboration with Chinese mainland and international partners to develop a strong AI Education Ecosystem.
Dr Tenny Lam, Executive Director of Hong Kong Education City, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership. “EdCity is honored to partner with the EDB for the inaugural Digital Education Week”, Lam said. He noted that dedicated zones for the Chinese mainland and Asia at the LTE will showcase advanced e-learning solutions and promote collaboration. “These new initiatives demonstrate EdCity’s commitment as a super-connector, uniting stakeholders from universities, the innovation and technology sector, and the education community to collaboratively build an ‘AI Education Ecosystem’ that advances digital education in Hong Kong and the nation”, Lam added. A notable feature will be the showcase of 22 solutions from the $500 million Quality Education Fund’s e-Learning Ancillary Facilities Programme (eLAFP), offering hands-on experiences.
Principal Assistant Secretary (Education Infrastructure) of the EDB Katharine Choi cited AIinLT summit as one of the opportunities where international experts would share their insights and knowledge on AI opportunities and challenges. The summit will feature approximately 100 paper presentations, teaching demonstrations, 11 workshops, and a technology showcase. "The education sector must embrace innovative technologies while cultivating proficiency in leveraging artificial intelligence", said Choi.
Gary Yeung, President of the Smart City Consortium, shared findings from a recent survey indicating that over 90 percent of students believe AI can enhance learning, though not replace teachers. He highlighted the Start-up Circle at the LTE as a space for ed-tech start-ups to present their innovations. “These findings reaffirm the direction of deeply integrating innovative technologies with education”, Yeung remarked.
By merging innovation with education, Hong Kong's Digital Education Week is setting the stage for a technologically advanced future for its students and educators.
