Kookmin University has taken a decisive step to deepen its ties with the artificial intelligence and software industries by formally launching the KMU AX Innovation Alliance. The university held a launch ceremony on its northern Seoul campus on July 24, bringing together senior academic leaders and representatives from a group of leading technology companies.
The event was attended by key university figures, including Sohn Jin-sik, vice president for planning and general director of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, and Hwang Sun-tae, dean of the College of Computer Science. On the industry side, participants included representatives from KT, NHN Cloud, Tmax-Tibero, Innogrid, Lemong, Hancominnostream, Maum.AI, Xytron, m2Cloud and Jin Infra.
During the ceremony, university officials and company representatives discussed concrete ways to strengthen collaboration. The talks covered joint research projects, co-developed academic programs, on-site training opportunities, internships and clearer pathways to employment for students. Participants also explored the possibility of forming a broader consortium of companies dedicated to cultivating AI and software professionals who can meet real industry demands.
With the alliance now established, Kookmin University plans to steadily expand its network of partners in the AI and software sectors. The goal is to produce measurable results by linking the technological strengths and practical needs of participating companies with the university’s existing education, research and industry-academia programs. Officials said the collaboration will span multiple fields, including cloud and AI infrastructure, generative AI and AI agents, data technologies, enterprise software and cybersecurity.
The initiative is designed to create a continuous cycle that connects classroom learning with real projects, research and hands-on training, ultimately leading to employment. By embedding industry requirements into the educational process, the university aims to equip students with skills that are immediately relevant to employers.
The launch comes as Kookmin University marks its 80th anniversary and prepares for its next phase of development. Under the vision of “A University That Sets the Standard for Higher Education” and the slogan “Make the Rule, Break the Rule,” the institution has set out a mid- to long-term strategy known as KMU VISION 2035: EDGE. EDGE stands for entrepreneurship, digital transformation, global competency and ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance).
As part of this strategy, the university has identified eight specialized areas in which it intends to strengthen its competitiveness. One of these priority areas is “AI+X,” which focuses on combining artificial intelligence with other disciplines to create new educational and research opportunities. University officials described the new alliance as an important foundation for advancing Kookmin’s ambitions to become a more AI-focused institution.
A university representative noted that the alliance launch strengthens the structural base for industry-academia cooperation needed to support this direction. Follow-up working-level discussions are expected between the university and the participating companies. These talks will identify specific industry challenges and develop joint projects in education, technology development and talent cultivation.
