MAHE Dubai Launches NEXORA To Advance AI Education

  • Synopsis
Manipal Academy of Higher Education has launched NEXORA, an advanced AI laboratory at its Dubai campus to support hands-on learning in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and emerging technologies. The initiative aligns with the UAE’s AI-driven growth strategy and aims to prepare students for future careers through real-world AI development, research, and innovation projects.

As the United Arab Emirates accelerates its transformation into a global technology and innovation hub, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Dubai Campus has launched NEXORA, a next-generation artificial intelligence laboratory designed to prepare students for the rapidly evolving AI-driven economy. The initiative comes at a time when artificial intelligence is reshaping industries, education systems, and workforce requirements across the world.

Education leaders believe advanced AI learning environments such as NEXORA will play a crucial role in equipping students with practical technology skills needed for future careers. The launch aligns with the UAE’s broader national strategy to become a leading center for artificial intelligence innovation, digital transformation, and advanced technology development.

Industry estimates currently value the UAE AI market at more than USD 3.47 billion, with projections suggesting annual growth of nearly 44% through 2030. Analysts also estimate that AI could contribute up to 14% of the country’s GDP in the coming years, reflecting the government’s aggressive investment in digital infrastructure, smart technologies, and future-ready talent development.

At the same time, the UAE has intensified efforts to integrate AI education into mainstream learning systems, including plans to introduce artificial intelligence studies into school curricula beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year. Rising employer demand for AI specialists, data analysts, and automation experts has further increased pressure on universities to modernize academic programs and provide hands-on technology training.

Against this backdrop, MAHE Dubai developed NEXORA as a fully integrated ecosystem where students can move from conceptualizing AI solutions to building and deploying real-world applications within a single collaborative environment. The NEXORA AI lab has been structured across specialized zones dedicated to ideation, learning, development, testing, and immersive user experiences. Students using the facility can design prototypes, train machine learning models, test AI applications, and showcase solutions designed to solve practical industry challenges.

University officials say this approach reflects a major shift in technology education, where the focus is moving away from purely theoretical instruction toward applied problem-solving and industry-driven innovation. Commenting on the launch, Dr. S. Sudhindra, Pro Vice Chancellor of MAHE Dubai, says “The conversation around artificial intelligence has moved from awareness to application. The real differentiator today is not access to tools, but the ability to apply them in meaningful, domain-specific contexts. With NEXORA, we are creating an environment where students are not just exposed to AI concepts, but are expected to build, test, and deploy solutions that reflect real industry challenges. This is essential to developing talent that is relevant from day one”.

One of the major highlights of the launch event was the demonstration of student-developed AI projects showcasing practical applications across several industries. These innovations included virtual avatars for customer engagement, real-time facial recognition systems running on edge computing devices for enhanced data privacy, intelligent retail inventory systems, voice-based biometric platforms, and sentiment analysis kiosks.

The projects illustrated how AI technologies are increasingly being integrated into sectors such as retail, customer service, enterprise operations, healthcare, and digital communication. The lab is supported by advanced technological infrastructure, including high-performance computing systems, cloud-integrated development environments, and edge AI platforms capable of supporting real-time intelligent applications.

MAHE Dubai also plans to introduce a dedicated quantum computing terminal, enabling students and researchers to explore the intersection of quantum technologies and artificial intelligence. According to Dr. Balamurugan Balusamy, Dean and Professor at the School of Engineering and IT, the focus of NEXORA is to ensure students gain practical experience working with real-world datasets, operational constraints, and enterprise-level AI systems rather than limiting education to classroom theory.

Designed as a cross-disciplinary initiative, NEXORA extends beyond engineering and information technology to include management, health sciences, media studies, and other academic fields increasingly influenced by AI-driven transformation. The lab is also expected to support research collaboration, faculty-led innovation projects, industry partnerships, and specialized skill development programs aligned with future workforce demands.

With the launch of NEXORA, MAHE Dubai Campus is positioning itself as a major contributor to the UAE’s growing innovation ecosystem and the broader effort to develop globally competitive AI talent for the next generation of digital industries.
