Masterminds Applies Brain Capital Model to UAE Early Learning

  • Masterminds Education, a Dubai-based nursery and early learning provider, is advancing a 'brain capital' approach to early childhood education in the UAE, arguing that the foundations for adaptability, judgment, creativity and lifelong learning are laid far earlier than most future-of-work discussions acknowledge. The organisation’s experience has contributed to a recent Knowledge at Wharton article titled 'Building Brain Capital: Why Early Childhood Education Shapes the Future Workforce and Economy'.

    The article was co-authored by Shamail Siddiqi, Co-founder and CEO of Masterminds Education, together with Dr Michael Platt, Faculty Director of the Wharton Neuroscience Initiative and Chief Neuroscientist at Masterminds Education, alongside researchers and experts from the University of Pennsylvania and the Brain Capital Alliance. It contends that as artificial intelligence transforms the global economy, the human capabilities that will matter most  including emotional regulation, curiosity, social skill and the capacity to keep learning begin developing in the earliest years of life.

    Brain capital refers to the combination of brain health and brain skills that enable people to learn, adapt, create, collaborate and contribute productively across their lives. Early childhood is a period of heightened neuroplasticity, during which experiences can shape developing neural systems in lasting ways. Language, movement, relationships, emotional regulation, music, intellectual challenge, exploration and social interaction all play interconnected roles.

    “Children don’t develop in silos,” Dr Platt said. “Cognitive, social, emotional and physical development interact continuously, which means the quality and pattern of a child’s experiences matter.”

    Masterminds has built its educational model around the principle of developmentally aligned education designing environments according to how children actually grow rather than treating cognitive, physical, social and emotional development as separate tracks. At its Early Learning Center in Dubai, children learn in small groups of six. Siddiqi explained that the small-group structure changes the quality of interaction itself.

    “Small groups are not simply about giving children more attention,” he said. “They fundamentally change the developmental environment. A teacher can understand each child more deeply, respond more quickly and create more opportunities for children to speak, question, explain, struggle and master something.”

    The organisation’s ATHENA+ Framework integrates intellectually ambitious learning with physical activity, languages, music, social interaction and emotional development. The goal is not merely to accelerate academic progress but to strengthen children’s overall capacity to learn. Siddiqi cautioned against the assumption that any early-years setting automatically delivers high-quality developmental outcomes.

    “The argument isn’t simply that children should start learning earlier,” he said. “It’s that we need to think much more carefully about what kind of learning experiences we are giving them during the period when the foundations for so many later capabilities are being established.” A large-group environment with limited adult interaction and predominantly passive activity, he noted, produces a very different experience from one characterised by close relationships, rich language, movement, challenge and carefully sequenced learning.

    The rise of artificial intelligence has made these foundations more urgent rather than less. AI systems can already retrieve information, generate sophisticated content and perform many cognitive tasks once reserved for human experts. Deep knowledge remains essential because people must be able to judge whether an AI-generated answer is insightful, superficial or incorrect. Yet knowledge alone is insufficient. Children will need judgment, adaptability, curiosity, creativity, self-regulation, communication and the ability to continue learning throughout their lives.

    “We cannot prepare children for an unpredictable future simply by giving them more information,” Siddiqi said. “We have to build the underlying capabilities that allow them to understand, judge, adapt, communicate and create. AI makes that much more urgent, but those capabilities begin developing long before a child enters university or the workforce.”

    Masterminds has refined its model in the UAE over more than a decade.     For the UAE, the discussion carries particular relevance. The country has placed artificial intelligence, education and human capital at the centre of its long-term economic strategy. Building an AI-ready economy requires more than computing power, technology investment or teaching children how to use new tools. It also requires people capable of performing the forms of judgment, creativity and adaptation that sophisticated technology cannot easily replicate.

    Parents cannot predict with certainty the jobs their young children will hold two decades from now. Attempting to anticipate every technical skill a four-year-old may need is unlikely to prove a durable strategy. Building children who are knowledgeable, curious, adaptable, confident, socially capable and able to keep learning offers a more robust foundation.

    “We may not know what jobs today’s children will eventually have,” Siddiqi said. “But we can know the type of mind we want to help develop — knowledgeable, curious, adaptable, confident, socially capable and able to keep learning. If we build those foundations properly, we give children something much more valuable than preparation for any single future.”

    The countries that lead in the AI economy will need technology, capital and infrastructure. They will also need highly capable human beings. Neuroscience and educational practice increasingly suggest that those capabilities begin much earlier and depend far more on the quality of early experiences than was once assumed.
