President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inaugurated the Department of Education’s (DepEd) groundbreaking initiative on Friday, marking a new chapter in the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the country’s education system. The program, called Project AGAP.AI short for Accelerating Governance and Adaptive Pedagogy through Artificial Intelligence serves as DepEd’s flagship platform for all AI-related efforts, aiming to promote responsible technological use while delivering accessible, high-quality education to Filipino students.
Speaking at the Quezon City Science High School during the launch, Marcos highlighted the importance of equipping students with AI skills while maintaining the human qualities essential for learning. “As we hit the ground running in 2026, once again, we start a new era in our educational system and in the way that we train our young people”, he said. He stressed that while AI is transforming communication and problem-solving, students must be guided to use technology confidently and ethically. “There are still some things that technology cannot do for us. Technology cannot replace discipline. It cannot replace effort. It cannot replace the habit of showing up prepared and ready to learn. It cannot replace hard work”, Marcos added.
Project AGAP.AI aligns with DepEd’s Quality Basic Education Development Plan 2025-2035 and is guided by the Bagong Pilipinas vision as well as ASEAN Vision 2045. Marcos emphasized that the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between education and technology, ensuring that Filipino students and institutions keep pace with global developments. “All of these initiatives will ensure that AI in education prepares our institutions to keep pace with technology and that every Filipino benefits from those new technologies”, he said.

The project’s framework is anchored on three pillars: AI in Education, focusing on teaching strategies; Education on AI, which addresses curriculum content; and AI for Education Systems, covering support services. With backing from the ASEAN Foundation and Google.org, DepEd plans to roll out a funded AI skills program that will reach 1.05 million learners, 300,000 teachers, and 150,000 parents. The national program includes 12-session capacity-building workshops covering AI fundamentals, practical implementation, ethics, privacy, security, and teaching about AI.
In collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), MIT Responsible AI for Social Empowerment & Education (MIT RAISE), and Day of AI, DepEd will integrate AI concepts into the basic education curriculum to strengthen learners’ computational thinking, digital innovation, and AI literacy. Marcos noted that the department will also pilot and adopt AI-powered tools and platforms, including innovations from the Education Center for AI Research and the Digital Education Council, to enhance teaching, learning, assessment, and school operations.
“Beyond policy and training, we are engaging with local and international partners to bring AI into the heart of learning”, Marcos said, underscoring the program’s commitment to responsible, human-centered AI adoption that empowers students and educators alike.
