PolyU Launches AI Platform To Transform Literature Reviews

    • PolyU launches 'Write For You', an AI-powered literature review platform enabling fast, multilingual, in-depth analysis of vast academic research.
    • The platform has gained over 40,000 global users since launch and was showcased at a major international AI conference earlier this year.
    • Led by Professor Liu Yan, the system promises 'zero-hallucination' research synthesis, significantly improving efficiency, reliability and cost-effectiveness in academic and policy research.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has developed an AI-powered literature review platform, 'Write For You', aimed at addressing the long-standing challenges associated with academic research synthesis. Designed to conduct in-depth, multilingual analysis across vast collections of scholarly work, the system is capable of generating comprehensive, reliable research reports with significantly greater efficiency than traditional methods.

Literature review is a foundational component of academic research and also plays a critical role in policymaking, corporate strategy and knowledge advancement. However, conventional literature review processes require extensive reading, screening and critical analysis of large volumes of material, often demanding substantial time and manpower. 'Write For You' seeks to overcome these constraints by automating key aspects of the process while maintaining academic rigour.

Since its launch earlier this year, the platform has gained rapid global traction, attracting more than 40,000 active users worldwide. It was also showcased at an artificial intelligence conference organised by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence in February, highlighting its relevance within the international research community.

The project is led by Professor Liu Yan, Associate Professor and Group Leader of the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Research Group at PolyU’s Department of Computing. The concept was inspired by PolyU Vice President (Education), Professor Cao Jiannong, who proposed in 2022 that artificial intelligence could be leveraged to automate and enhance educational research. Building on this idea, PhD student Zhang Zhi applied advanced intelligent agent techniques to tackle one of the most persistent challenges in generative AI hallucinations resulting in what the team describes as 'zero-hallucination' literature reviews with dependable reasoning and multilingual integration of academic sources.

Dr Chen Gong, a PhD graduate from the department, developed an intuitive user interface that allows users from a wide range of disciplines and industries to generate detailed research reports within minutes simply by describing their research topics. According to Professor Liu, the system dramatically improves research efficiency and reduces costs compared to traditional literature review methods, a factor that has driven its swift adoption across dozens of countries and regions.

Professor Cao noted that as AI continues to reshape education and research, PolyU is committed to harnessing generative AI to enhance research productivity while ensuring reliability. Looking ahead, he revealed plans to develop an autonomous 'AI Super Research Brain' capable of supporting research across all disciplines and stages, positioning Hong Kong-developed AI at the forefront of global innovation.

Beyond 'Write For You', PolyU continues to advance AI research through initiatives such as the PolyU Academy for Artificial Intelligence, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world applications across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. Recent developments also include a next-generation human-robot collaborative system for Industry 5.0, underscoring the university’s broader vision of human-centric, AI-driven innovation.
