A group of 15 specialist teachers from Singapore’s Academy of Teachers visited University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance Malay language education. The visit, held under the Smart Integration Programme 2025, focused on exchanging ideas around AI powered teaching methods for a multicultural and multilingual setting.
Hosted by the Faculty of Education, Language, and Communication (FELC), the teachers attended sessions led by Unimas experts. Dr Chuah Kee Man shared insights on using technology in classrooms, while Dr Haji Santrol Abdullah discussed teaching Malay in diverse rural communities.
FELC dean Dr Dilah Tuah, welcomed the delegation, expressing interest in future collaborations on research and academic publications. He emphasized the faculty’s goal of building regional partnerships to drive AI and pedagogical innovation.
Norhayati Awang, Director of Singapore's Malay Language Centre, praised Unimas as a leader in Malay language education and highlighted the importance of AI in Singapore’s diverse education system. She noted that the visit would support educators back home in adapting modern tools for effective language instruction.

The delegation also visited local schools SMK Padungan and SK St Teresa, to observe classroom practices. Teachers found the use of AI in language learning highly applicable to Singapore’s multicultural context.
The programme concluded with a positive outlook on strengthening regional cooperation through shared expertise, especially in the use of AI for language education.
