    • Two new VIs Future Intelligence and Materials-Positive Society join six existing initiatives, focusing on cross-disciplinary research and societal impact.
    • Science Tokyo aims to bridge research, education, and real-world solutions, fostering global collaboration for a Better Life, Better Society, and Better Planet.

The Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) has officially begun operations as Japan's second University for International Research Excellence, marking a significant milestone in the country’s higher education landscape. In a bold move to redefine the way education, research, and governance intersect, Science Tokyo has formally integrated eight Visionary Initiatives (VIs) into its organizational framework as of April 1, 2026. These initiatives form the backbone of a new, vision-driven, cross-disciplinary model designed to leverage the power of science to shape the future of society. By uniting research, graduate-level education, and social implementation, the VIs represent the core of Science Tokyo’s innovative approach to higher education.

Building on the six VIs launched in 2025, the Institute has now introduced two additional initiatives: the Future Intelligence Visionary Initiative, led by Program Director Hiroshi Asahara, and the Materials-Positive Society Visionary Initiative, led by Program Director Masanao Inokoshi. With these additions, Science Tokyo now operates eight VIs that collectively explore the critical topics and technologies poised to drive societal transformation in the coming decades.

These initiatives are not only embedded within the Institute’s academic and research activities but also foster a co-creation ecosystem that bridges the Institute with domestic and international universities, businesses, local governments, and citizens.

At the heart of this transformation is Science Tokyo’s threefold vision of creating a Better Life, a Better Society, and a Better Planet. The VIs allow the Institute to mobilize its knowledge and resources in collaboration with off-campus experts, ensuring that research outcomes are effectively translated into real-world solutions. This framework also provides a long-term, autonomous foundation for operating a cross-disciplinary research and education system, with plans to launch new graduate-level VI courses in the 2028 academic year.

With these developments, Science Tokyo positions itself as a global hub for innovation and learning, offering students, researchers, and collaborators an unprecedented opportunity to engage in forward-thinking, transformative science. By integrating visionary research with practical social impact, the Institute exemplifies a modern model of education that seeks to create meaningful change for both society and the planet.
