Hanyang University Builds End-to-End Support for Global Students

Hanyang University is advancing a new model of internationalization that moves beyond traditional student recruitment to deliver continuous, end-to-end support for international students. Under its vision of 'Boundless, Passionate and Uncharted'. the university aims to foster shared growth across Korean higher education while helping global talent succeed academically, professionally, and socially in Korea.

The Office of International Admissions described the approach as boundless in scope, driven by passion for growth, and willing to explore uncharted territory. Officials emphasized that the model prioritizes breaking down barriers of nationality, culture, roles, and goals. Rather than treating international students solely as temporary learners or customers, the university views them as future talent who can contribute to Korea’s society and economy over the long term.

Approximately 20,000 international students study and grow together at Hanyang each year. To support this community, the university has shifted its strategy from isolated recruitment efforts to an integrated system focused on long-term settlement. At the heart of this change is the HY All-Care System, which replaces fragmented, program-based assistance with continuous guidance that follows each student throughout their journey.

The system operates through a five-step road map that includes job information sessions, one-on-one counseling, career camps, job fairs, and post-employment support. It also follows a four-stage virtuous cycle covering international student recruitment, student support and management, career support, and talent retention and settlement. By linking these stages, the university has brought traditionally separate processes into a single, coordinated framework.

Recruitment efforts illustrate the breadth of the approach. University officials conducted outreach trips to seven countries, including China, Vietnam, India, Mongolia, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. Once students arrive, support continues through cultural adaptation and psychological counseling programs that have served 1,402 participants. Career assistance is equally structured, with 15 dedicated programs designed to help international students secure employment.

The Office of International Admissions integrates these activities with a balanced scorecard performance management system. The scorecard functions not merely as an evaluation tool but as a strategic platform aligned with the university’s mid- to long-term development plan and its goal of strengthening global competitiveness. Biweekly full-team meetings and weekly subteam sessions allow continuous monitoring of progress and identification of synergies across initiatives.

In 2025, all four of the office’s key performance indicators met or exceeded their targets. The indicator for strengthening students’ career competencies reached 200 percent of its goal, while activities aligned with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals achieved 125 percent of the target. These results reflect both operational effectiveness and tangible benefits for students.

Some international students have secured positions at leading companies in Korea and abroad with the university’s assistance. Participants in the support programs have described the career guidance as one of the most valuable resources during their job search and preparation. The combination of academic training, Korean-language development, character education, and practical adaptation skills is intended to produce graduates equipped for professional success and social integration.

Hanyang attributes much of its progress to a strong global network that includes 731 partner universities overseas and approximately 15,000 international alumni. The university has also incorporated AI-based systems across the recruitment and support process to improve efficiency and personalization. Alumni chapters, such as the recently inaugurated Hanyang University Malaysian Alumni Chapter in Kuala Lumpur, further extend this network and provide ongoing connections for graduates.

The university’s approach reflects a broader recognition that successful internationalization requires more than enrollment numbers. By focusing on settlement and long-term contribution, Hanyang seeks to create a cycle in which international students thrive in Korea and, in turn, strengthen the country’s higher education reputation and talent base.

Looking ahead, officials said the university will continue refining its framework to nurture students who combine subject-matter expertise with Korean-language proficiency, strong character, and the ability to adapt to Korean society. The HY All-Care System and the four-stage cycle are expected to remain central to this effort, with ongoing adjustments based on performance data and student feedback.

Hanyang’s model offers a practical example of how Korean universities can move from transactional recruitment toward holistic, sustained engagement with global talent.
