RGU and Gajraj Corps Sign MoU Strengthening Army-Academia Links

Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) and the Indian Army’s 4 Corps, popularly known as the Gajraj Corps, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Tezpur on Wednesday to strengthen the army-academia partnership. The agreement aims to promote academic engagement, experiential learning, knowledge exchange and meaningful interaction between university students and the armed forces.

The MoU also seeks to give students wider exposure to the strategic, socio-cultural and developmental dimensions of the Northeast region. The programme witnessed the simultaneous signing of similar MoUs between the Gajraj Corps and two other prominent universities in Assam Gauhati University and Tezpur University marking a coordinated effort to deepen institutional collaboration across the region.

Speaking at the ceremony, RGU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shivaraj described the MoU as an important milestone in strengthening institutional ties. “Universities must provide students not only with academic knowledge but also with wider perspectives and meaningful real-world experiences. This partnership will create valuable opportunities for our students to learn, engage and understand the larger responsibilities of nation-building,” he said.

Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta emphasised that sustained interaction between the Army and universities can significantly contribute to developing strategic awareness and a deeper understanding of the Northeast. “Academic institutions and the armed forces can work together to create informed, responsible and socially conscious young citizens. Such engagements can also help students appreciate the rich socio-cultural and strategic significance of the region, while realising the set parameters of the NEP-2020,” he noted.

Tezpur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amarendra Kumar Das highlighted the value of creating platforms for meaningful interaction between students and institutions engaged in different dimensions of nation-building. “Collaborations of this nature broaden the horizons of students by connecting academic learning with ground realities. Stronger Army-Academia partnerships can contribute to knowledge sharing, leadership development and a deeper understanding of the Northeast,” he said.

Lieutenant General Neeraj Shukla, General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps, underlined the complementary roles of the Armed Forces and academia in nation-building. “Greater interaction between the Army and academic institutions would help young minds develop a better understanding of the region and the challenges associated with its security and development. Such engagements provide an opportunity to inspire and prepare our youth for responsible citizenship and service to the nation,” he stated.

RGU Registrar N.T. Rikam expressed hope that the MoU would provide a lasting framework for sustained engagement. He said the broad aim is to establish collaborative mechanisms for academic learning in diverse subjects, research, field studies, institutional visits, internship programmes, grooming students for careers in the Armed and Para-Military Forces, and character building. These efforts, he added, would contribute to national security, development, social harmony and national integration.

RGU Joint Registrar David Pertin noted that the association between the Indian Army and the three institutes of higher learning would help bridge existing gaps. He explained that the basic objective is to strengthen mutual academic and technical collaboration so that the capability of all ranks of the Indian Army, veterans, wards of Veer Naris, personnel sponsored by the Army, as well as university students and faculty, can be enhanced. The partnership is aligned with the national vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 through a whole-of-society approach.

An important component of the engagement was the flagging off of selected students for a forward area tour under the Gajraj Corps’ “Bharat Rannbhoomi Darshan” initiative. Thirty students from the three universities, accompanied by their teacher escorts, embarked on a four-day visit covering Missamari in Assam and the Bumla and Tawang areas in Arunachal Pradesh. The itinerary includes visits to significant sites such as the Drone Nursery, the Subedar Joginder Singh War Memorial and the Holy Waterfall, offering participants first-hand exposure to the operational environment and the lives and responsibilities of personnel serving in forward areas.

The initiative reflects a growing recognition that academic institutions and the armed forces share complementary roles in shaping responsible citizens. By combining classroom learning with real-world exposure to security, development and cultural realities of the Northeast, the partnership seeks to produce graduates who are not only academically competent but also strategically aware and socially conscious.

Officials present at the ceremony included RGU’s nodal officer Arvind Kumar Kushwaha, Assistant Professor in NSS, along with other faculty members and Army representatives. The MoU is expected to open multiple avenues for joint research, leadership development programmes, guest lectures, field visits and career guidance related to national service.

In the broader context of the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises holistic and multidisciplinary education along with experiential learning, the army-academia collaboration offers a practical model. It also supports the national aspiration of Viksit Bharat@2047 by preparing youth who understand both the opportunities and challenges of India’s border regions.

As the partnership moves forward, both RGU and the Gajraj Corps are expected to develop detailed action plans covering academic exchanges, training modules, research collaboration and student internship opportunities. The success of the “Bharat Rannbhoomi Darshan” tour will likely serve as an early indicator of the initiative’s potential to inspire and educate the next generation of citizens.

Through this MoU, Rajiv Gandhi University, Gauhati University, Tezpur University and the Indian Army’s Gajraj Corps have taken a concrete step towards building a stronger bridge between higher education and national service, with the Northeast region at the centre of their shared vision.
