A groundbreaking international collaboration is opening new doors for students in India as Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) and the University of Maryland join forces to launch an innovative Artificial Intelligence certificate program under the Viksit Amritsar Partnership 2026 initiative. The inaugural virtual event, titled 'AI for the Future: Guru Nanak Dev University and University of Maryland', brought together academic leaders, policymakers, educators, and students to celebrate a program designed to equip talented young learners with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence education.

The newly launched program will provide 30 carefully selected students from GNDU Amritsar with access to advanced learning opportunities in AI technology, offering exposure to international academic expertise and emerging industry trends. The initiative reflects a growing recognition that artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other advanced technologies are becoming essential components of modern education and workforce development.

Delivering the keynote address, Delhi Lieutenant Governor and Viksit Amritsar founding member Taranjit Sandhu emphasized that education remains the most powerful catalyst for progress and social transformation. He highlighted how members of the Viksit Amritsar initiative, many of whom received their education in India before building successful careers in the United States, are now giving back by creating opportunities for future generations. According to Sandhu, the program represents a meaningful investment in young minds and demonstrates the importance of strengthening educational ties between India and the United States.

The selected students emerged from a highly competitive pool of 300 applicants, reflecting the growing interest among young Indians in pursuing careers related to artificial intelligence training, data science, and emerging technologies. Sandhu noted that the program would help students gain a deeper understanding of one of the most transformative innovations of the 21st century while preparing them for future opportunities in research, entrepreneurship, and technology-driven industries.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh said the partnership goes beyond academics and reflects a shared commitment to advancing humanity through knowledge, innovation, and ethical responsibility. He emphasized that technological progress should remain inclusive, sustainable, and guided by strong human values.

Leaders from the University of Maryland also expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. Dean Amitabh Varshney welcomed the selected students and emphasized that artificial intelligence education is no longer confined to research laboratories or university textbooks. Instead, AI is transforming industries such as healthcare, agriculture, business, and public services around the world.

The partnership further strengthens the long-standing relationship between India and the United States in the field of higher education collaboration. Maryland Secretary of Higher Education Sanjay Rai highlighted the tremendous potential of international academic partnerships and encouraged students to pursue groundbreaking research.

He expressed confidence that future innovations in AI research, technology education, and entrepreneurship could emerge from programs like this, potentially leading to the next generation of global technology leaders.
