A two-week capacity building program on 'Geopolitics in the 21st Century: Global Trends, Regional Dynamics, and Implications for India' commenced at Jamia Millia Islamia, bringing together 30 early-career faculty members from universities and research institutes across the country, officials said.
The program, held at the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Academy of International Studies, is sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research and aims to strengthen academic research capacity and understanding of global geopolitics among participants. Scheduled from May 4 to May 16, 2026, the 12-day program includes 36 sessions covering maritime geopolitics, geoeconomics, energy politics, counter-terrorism, and nuclear geopolitics, along with regional studies focusing on West Asia, Africa, Europe, Eurasia, and the Americas.

The inaugural session was addressed by Zubair Meenai, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, who emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in social science research and highlighted ICSSR’s role in supporting young scholars. The keynote lecture was delivered by Talmiz Ahmad, former Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the UAE, who spoke on evolving global geopolitical trends and India’s strategic position in the changing world order.
The program is being organized by Mujib Alam, Course Director, and Sujata Ashwarya, Co-Course Director from the Centre for West Asian Studies. In addition to thematic discussions, the program includes sessions on research methodology, quantitative data analysis, academic writing, and decolonial frameworks, in line with ICSSR guidelines.
Scholars and experts from institutions including Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University are participating as resource persons. The program will conclude on May 16 with a valedictory address by Arvind Gupta.
