Indonesia's Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is preparing to roll out a large school revitalization program starting July 2025 to upgrade 10,440 schools nationwide. The program is part of the government's Quick Response Programs to improve the quality and accessibility of education throughout the country.
Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti made the announcement during his address at the 2nd Batch Regional Head Retreat hosted by the Institute of Public Administration. He pointed out that the initiative will follow a self-management approach, whereby local school communities and residents are actively involved in development and maintenance work, which will generate ownership and shared responsibility.
The revitalization will begin in July and can be expanded to additional schools if needed," Minister Mu'ti said. "We are investing a total of Rp16.9 trillion (around US$1.03 billion) in this program.
The renewal will not just be on the physical front. It will also entail the deployment of digital infrastructure to enable education change. There are plans to distribute 300,000 smart TVs in the next three to four years to support the digital capability of schools for learning.
The 2025 program encompasses a broad scope of institutions, such as early childhood education centers (PAUD), elementary and junior high schools, senior secondary and vocational schools (SMA/SMK), community learning centers (SKB/PKBM), and special education schools (SLB).
The ministry reasserted that the self-management model is intended to enhance governance and promote greater community involvement, such that the revitalization yields immediate benefit as well as lasting educational quality.
