South Korea is expanding its education and cultural center in Paraguay to meet rising demand for Korean language learning and cultural exchange programs. The Ministry of Education (South Korea) announced on Thursday that it has expanded and relocated its Korean Education Center in Paraguay in response to rapidly growing demand for Korean language learning across the South American nation. The move reflects a broader effort to strengthen international educational cooperation and expand the global reach of Korean language programs. Officials highlighted that this development is part of a long-standing strategy involving overseas education hubs and cultural exchange initiatives under Korean Education Center expansion, Korean language education Paraguay, international education cooperation.
The Korean Education Center in Paraguay has a long institutional history, first established in 1980 within the South Korean Embassy in Asuncion before moving to an independent facility in 1993. Over the decades, it has served as a key bridge for educational collaboration between South Korea and Paraguay, supporting language instruction and exchange programs. Today, the global network of Korean Education Centers includes 47 institutions across 22 countries, reinforcing the reach of overseas Korean education centers, Korean cultural diplomacy, global education network expansion.
The latest relocation, completed in February, was driven by a surge in interest following Paraguay’s decision to introduce Korean as an official second foreign language in its national education system in May 2024. This policy shift significantly increased student enrollment demand and required upgraded infrastructure to support structured learning programs. The new facility now includes six classrooms designed to accommodate expanding instructional needs under Korean language curriculum Paraguay, foreign language education reform, educational infrastructure development.

An official opening ceremony was held on Wednesday to mark the relocation, bringing together senior diplomatic and education representatives from both countries. The event was attended by the South Korean ambassador to Paraguay and a delegation from the Education Ministry, alongside approximately 80 guests including Paraguayan education leaders, school principals, and members of the Korean community. The gathering underscored growing bilateral engagement under South Korea Paraguay education ties, international academic cooperation, Korean language program growth.
During the ceremony, the ministry honored former Paraguayan Vice Minister of Education and Science Maria Gloria Pereira with a plaque of appreciation for her contributions to expanding Korean-language education in the country. In addition, a memorandum of understanding was signed with four representatives of the Korean community in Paraguay to support a project aimed at renovating school libraries that offer Korean-language courses. These initiatives highlight educational partnership Paraguay Korea, school library renovation program, community-based education support.
“Based on Paraguay’s strong interest in Korea, we hope the Korean Education Center in Paraguay will further develop into a comprehensive educational hub encompassing Korean-language education, academic exchanges and cultural exchanges”, South Korean Education Minister Choi Kyo-jin says. “We will continue to support young people from both countries through the center so they can experience each other’s education and culture and grow into globally competitive talent,” he added.
