RIT Dubai Launches MS in Integrative Design for Future Leaders

  • Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai has officially launched a new Master of Science in Integrative Design (MSID), a programme designed to equip professionals and graduates from diverse academic and professional backgrounds with the strategic and creative problem-solving skills needed to tackle complex workplace challenges.

The MSID takes a deliberately interdisciplinary approach, bringing together design thinking, systems thinking, sustainability, technology and innovation. Unlike traditional master’s programmes that primarily target graduates of established design disciplines, this degree welcomes participants from creative, technical, engineering, management and other professional fields who wish to integrate design, creativity and innovation with business acumen, emerging technologies and strategic thinking.

Accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the programme also benefits from the global accreditation of RIT’s Art and Design Departments by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The curriculum combines creative techniques such as brainstorming, immersion, contextual research and empathy with rigorous approaches to feasibility, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and innovation. Through applied projects and research, students learn to move from identifying complex problems to developing, evaluating and communicating innovative products, services and systems.

Flexibility forms a core strength of the MSID. Students can select three electives from other RIT Dubai master’s programmes, allowing them to build an individualised pathway that complements the core design and innovation focus with specialised knowledge from other fields. The two-year, part-time programme is delivered face-to-face at the RIT Dubai campus across five academic terms, with evening classes specifically structured to accommodate working professionals.

Dr. Yousef Al Assaf, President of RIT Dubai, emphasised the strategic importance of the new offering. “At RIT Dubai, we believe meaningful innovation happens at the intersection of disciplines. The launch of the Master of Science in Integrative Design is a direct response to the UAE’s continued transformation towards a diversified, knowledge-based economy, and to the region’s growing need for leaders who can move fluidly between design, technology and business. This programme reflects our continued investment in academic offerings that prepare graduates not just to enter the workforce, but to help shape its future, in line with the ambitions of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.”

The programme’s industry engagement model is deeply embedded in the curriculum. Students work on real-world challenges, enabling hands-on learning and direct collaboration with creative development teams across industries. This practical orientation prepares graduates to contribute immediately in environments that value cross-disciplinary collaboration and human-centred solutions.

Dr. Todd Jokl, Dean of RIT’s College of Art and Design, highlighted the unique suitability of the Dubai campus for such a programme. “There is no better university where to launch the MSID programme than RIT Dubai, an institution that exemplifies cross-collaborative thinking and problem-solving at the intersection of technology, the arts, design, and innovation. Graduates of this programme will be perfectly positioned to engage in the UAE, Dubai, and broader regional economies that possess a bold spirit of forward-looking entrepreneurship in both their governmental and private industry sectors.”

Dr. Carlos Montana-Hoyos, Associate Professor and Chair of the Interdisciplinary Art and Design Department at RIT Dubai, explained the programme’s relevance to contemporary organisational needs. “The Master of Science in Integrative Design responds to the changing nature of challenges faced by businesses and organisations. Combining design methodologies with technology, business and human-centred thinking, the programme supports graduates and professionals from diverse backgrounds to integrate the systems and user needs that will enable them to develop meaningful solutions to real-world challenges. This will promote their personal and professional growth while opening new pathways for innovation and entrepreneurship across a broad range of disciplines.”

The launch comes at a time when the UAE and the wider region are prioritising knowledge-based economic diversification. Programmes that bridge design, technology and business strategy are increasingly seen as essential for producing leaders capable of driving sustainable innovation. By welcoming students from non-traditional design backgrounds, the MSID expands access to advanced design education and strengthens the talent pipeline for industries seeking professionals who can navigate complexity with both creative and analytical rigour.

Applications for the Master of Science in Integrative Design will open in October 2026, with the first intake scheduled to begin in January 2027. Prospective students are encouraged to explore how the programme’s interdisciplinary structure and industry-aligned projects can support their career advancement or entrepreneurial ambitions.

With this new degree, RIT Dubai continues to expand its portfolio of forward-looking academic offerings, reinforcing its role as a hub for interdisciplinary education that aligns with national and regional economic priorities while preparing graduates to lead in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
