Sarawak Bets on STEM to Build Future-Ready Talent

    • Sarawak is positioning STEM participation as a driver of innovation and talent development.
    • BIRT 2026 is drawing 265 teams from 10 countries and regions.
    • The state is linking education reform with PCDS 2030 and future-ready skills.

SARAWAK is strengthening its push to build a future-ready talent pipeline, with growing student participation in STEM programmes and competitions positioning the state as a rising hub for innovation.

State Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the government remains committed to equipping young people with the skills, confidence and mindset needed for future challenges.

Speaking at the launch of the Borneo International Robot Tournament (BIRT) 2026 in Miri, Sagah said the ministry backed the event as main sponsor because it reflects Sarawak’s ambition to develop a highly skilled and globally competitive generation. His speech was delivered by Innovation Division head Dr Cheong Yaw Liang.

“Technology is not just about machines, but about people”, Sagah said, adding that behind every robot is a human mind shaped by creativity, curiosity and problem-solving. He said the tournament’s theme, 'Robots Meet Culture', reflects Sarawak’s diversity, heritage and unity while also encouraging innovation and technological growth.

Sagah said the state’s education agenda remains aligned with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, with efforts focused on strengthening educators, improving learning environments, expanding STEM and TVET pathways, and deepening collaboration between industry and institutions.

He said the aim is to build analytical thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills and technological literacy, especially in artificial intelligence, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

BIRT 2026 has grown into an international platform, with 265 teams from Japan, Laos, Taiwan, Macau, South Korea, Mexico, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia taking part. This year’s edition features six categories, including Robosumo (SPIKE Prime) and League of Mecha-Clash (LOM) Matrix.

Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli said 56 schools represented by 96 teams from across the state are participating, reflecting stronger confidence in STEM education. He said such platforms give students hands-on learning experiences that complement classroom education and prepare them to compete globally.
