Singapore to Introduce AI in Primary Schools from Primary 4

    • Gradual AI rollout begins from Primary 4
    • Teacher-supervised use via SLS platform
    • Focus remains on strong foundational learning

Artificial intelligence is gradually making its way into Singapore’s primary school classrooms, but not without caution. Education authorities are taking a measured approach to ensure young learners are introduced to AI in a controlled and purposeful manner, while addressing concerns from parents about early exposure.

Desmond Lee stated that AI integration will begin from Primary 4, emphasizing a 'low exposure' model under close supervision. The focus remains firmly on building strong foundational skills before expanding into more advanced digital tools. This phased rollout aims to balance innovation with responsible learning practices.

Supporting this approach, Liew Wei Li explained that schools will use carefully selected AI tools designed specifically for educational purposes. These tools will be accessed through the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS), the Ministry of Education’s official online learning portal. Importantly, all AI usage at this level will be guided by teachers to ensure appropriate and meaningful engagement.

Education leaders emphasized that as AI becomes increasingly embedded in everyday life, schools play a crucial role in teaching students how to use these technologies responsibly. Rather than leaving children to explore AI independently on the open internet, structured guidance within classrooms is seen as a safer and more effective approach.

While some parents remain cautious about introducing AI too early, the ministry’s strategy highlights a careful balance leveraging innovation while safeguarding foundational learning and student well-being.
