South Korea Enhances Medical Training with New Anatomy Centers

    • Catholic University of Korea and Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital designated as Anatomy Education Support Centers.
    • Centers will support body donation programs and improve dissection training for medical students.
    • Initiative part of broader investment to enhance medical school infrastructure.

To improve hands on medical training, South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare has designated the Catholic University of Korea and Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital as official Anatomy Education Support Centers. This initiative aims to strengthen dissection education for medical students and address the shortage of donated bodies across medical schools.

The centers will serve as national hubs to support universities lacking sufficient body donations. They will connect schools with potential donors through family consultations and offer guidance on managing the entire donation process. This includes proper legal, ethical, and operational frameworks to help universities build more sustainable donation systems.

Beyond coordination, the centers will also provide practical dissection environments, including access to donated bodies and well equipped labs, especially during periods of high demand. The goal is to ensure consistent, quality education for medical students across the country, regardless of their institution’s size or resources.

The project is part of a broader ‘Investment Plan for Improving Medical School Education Conditions,’ announced in 2023, and reflects the government's commitment to modernizing healthcare education. A budget of 512 million won has been allocated for the project this year, with each center receiving support for staffing and operational costs.

Public Health Policy Officer Jeong Tong ryong emphasized that the government will continue to gather on-ground feedback to improve the anatomy training system and ensure ethical, high quality medical education across South Korea.
