As UAE universities resume classes after spring break, higher education institutions are embracing flexible learning arrangements to ensure students can continue their studies without disruption. While most universities have returned to online learning, several institutions with residential campuses are offering hybrid learning and temporary relocation provisions, allowing students to stay connected whether they are on campus or abroad.
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research extended distance learning for two weeks following an early spring break, while also allowing universities to submit requests to resume in-person classes based on their operational and educational needs. Institutions have responded by creating adaptive frameworks that address the diverse circumstances of international students and faculty spread across multiple time zones.
At Heriot-Watt University Dubai, online classes are set to continue until April 5, with all coursework, assessments, and student services delivered remotely. The university has also introduced a temporary relocation policy for staff traveling internationally, emphasizing flexibility, well-being, and uninterrupted academic progress. Similarly, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi prioritized the needs of its international student body, allowing students to maintain their travel plans while extending the return deadline to ensure a gradual and safe reentry. The institution has continued to provide campus support services, including psychological counseling, residence assistance, and academic guidance.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education Dubai and BITS Pilani Dubai Campus have also implemented hybrid learning solutions, ensuring that both residential and remote students remain supported through wellbeing programs, virtual fitness sessions, and consistent academic check-ins. Faculty and students abroad are able to participate seamlessly in online classes, while flexible attendance and assessment policies accommodate those who remain outside the UAE.
Leaders across the sector emphasized that there is no mandatory requirement for students or faculty to return to campus during this period, reflecting a broader recognition that online and hybrid learning are now integral to higher education delivery. Institutions are using their digital infrastructure, trained faculty, and structured online platforms to ensure that academic quality, student engagement, and learning outcomes remain uncompromised.
Universities are prepared for the long haul, balancing safety with continuity, while maintaining a human connection that makes campus life more than just academic. As conditions improve, they look forward to welcoming students back, reaffirming that universities are not only centers of learning but also spaces of dialogue, interaction, and shared experience.
