Engineering education is undergoing an evolution in Asia with the emergence of advanced technology courses that align with the rapidly growing technology industry. Innovations that have come into light within the last two decades, including Space Research, Robotics Research, Nanomaterials and MEMS, Design and process Simulations, Artificial intelligence, Machine Learning and Cyber Security, have completely changed the perception of engineering studies. It is being observed that the more technology gets customised, the more requirements there will be for skilled professionals who can execute them.
Interested students from Asian countries come to India to pursue higher education in engineering but often face challenges because of language and cultural diversities. This is why institutions need to make them feel at home and provide them with full exposure to Indian cultures and languages. Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore understands this very aspect and is equipped with a specialised mentorship program for students from abroad to get them comfortable with the environment of the country. It has emerged as one of the trusted engineering institutions in India offering the most advanced engineering courses along with a continued focus on innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.
The college functions under the Nitte Education Trust and has three campuses in the state of Karnataka. Apart from the Institute of Engineering, the education trust also has institutions in medical and pharmaceutical sciences, physiotherapy, audiology, and other scientific education and research. Nitte Education Trust was established in 1979 by Late. Justice K.S Hegde and now it operates a full-fledged university named Nitte Deemed to Be University.
“We are home to a vibrant community of over 300 international students from countries such as Nepal, Indonesia, the Middle East, different countries in Africa, and others from various parts of the country. To help these students acclimatise, the institute offers specialised mentorship programs including language and cultural orientation, tours to various parts of the country, and celebrations of international festivals, fostering a sense of belonging and community”, mentions Dr Sudheer Reddy, Dean (Academics), Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology.
Focus on Diversity and Knowledge Sharing
The institute believes in knowledge sharing from the core and has established an education infrastructure that consists of different kinds of lab and research facilities. Here, education and research go hand in hand as the institution aims at the holistic development of students. A Centre of Excellence has been set for every department where many faculties are engaged in research and mentor students in the areas of their interests. The institute has a dedicated center for robotics research where many kinds of robots have been developed only using research. Through this initiative, many students were able to build robots and gain patents that acted as a competitive advantage for them. “We focus on enhancing the soft skills of students and provide them with career assistance by all means possible. Strategic industry collaborations have been done by the institute with reputed MNCs which helps it in providing good placement and internship opportunities to students. Our focus on industry collaborations is not limited to the borders of India but also has been done abroad, and many of our students have been placed in reputed organisations worldwide”, states Dr Sudheer.
What primarily sets the institute apart is its approach towards international students. It can be observed that students face different kinds of language and cultural challenges in coping with the environment of this country. This is where the institute comes in and offers dedicated mentorship programs that help the students understand the aspects that will be necessary while living in India. It also takes the students on tours and excursions to different parts of the country so that they are exposed to the languages and cultures. To further strengthen the bond, the institute celebrates occasions of different countries as a welcoming gesture for international students.

The yearly cultural fest and the institute’s deep focus on extra-curricular activities are also the reasons why it stands apart in the education sector. It understands that holistic development can only be achieved with a 360-degree focus on growth. “Our students participate in many cultural events all across the country and some of our students are part of New Delhi’s Republic Day parade every year”, says Dr Sudheer.
Future Projections
The institute has gained significant trust and recognition in the education sector of the country because of its liberal outlook and focus on holistic development. Looking ahead, it wants to further strengthen its industry collaborations and provide students with better internship and higher education opportunities. “NMIT is already incubating several startups, fostering a thriving ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship. Building on this momentum, the institute aims to expand its incubation support by enhancing mentorship programs, providing seed funding opportunities, and strengthening industry partnerships. The goal is to create a dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem where students can transform their innovative ideas into successful ventures. Additionally, NMIT plans to further its industry collaborations, offering students enhanced opportunities for internships, research, and higher education prospects globally”, concludes Dr Sudheer.
