HK Launches First Govt-Led Green Maritime Fuel Trainer Program

    • Hong Kong launches world’s first tutor training program on green maritime fuel, preparing educators for sustainable shipping operations.
    • Training-the-Trainer Program developed with PolyU and industry partners, equipping trainers with technical and practical knowledge for low-emission vessels.
    • Focus on workforce readiness and sustainability education, combining professional development and academic enrichment across the maritime sector.

The Transport and Logistics Bureau has launched the world’s first administration-led tutor training program focused on green maritime fuel, marking a significant step in preparing the next generation of instructors for Hong Kong’s transition to low-emission shipping. The initiative, titled the Training-the-Trainer Programme: Green Maritime Fuel for Sustainable Shipping, is designed to equip educators with both the core knowledge and practical skills needed to guide seafarers and shore-based personnel in safely operating green vessels.

Developed in collaboration with the Maritime Just Transition Task Force, and supported by the Hong Kong Shipowners Association and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the program held its first course at PolyU. Funded by the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund under the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Board, the program reflects a growing emphasis on integrating sustainability education into vocational and professional training within the maritime sector.

The program’s main objective is to nurture a cadre of trainers with strong technical expertise and practical knowledge in green marine fuels, who can then educate others across the industry. By doing so, it aims to ensure that Hong Kong’s maritime workforce is prepared to meet the challenges of operating environmentally friendly vessels, while simultaneously addressing the city’s manpower needs in maritime education and training.

Participants in the program include maritime trainers, education and training institutions, regulatory authorities, ship managers and owners, seafarers, industry practitioners, and tertiary students studying maritime-related disciplines. Two intensive three-day courses were scheduled from yesterday through next Wednesday, followed by a one-day seminar specifically designed for tertiary students, demonstrating the program’s dual focus on professional development and academic enrichment.

This initiative represents a major milestone in sustainability education within the maritime industry, combining government leadership, industry collaboration, and academic support to create a structured pathway for knowledge transfer. By preparing trainers who can cascade expertise on green shipping technologies, the program strengthens Hong Kong’s position as a forward-looking hub for maritime skills development and environmentally responsible industry practices.
