HSBC Private Bank has launched a global education programme in partnership with MIT Sloan School of Management to prepare the next generation of wealthy families for leadership roles in their businesses and wealth management.
The Future Family Leaders Digital Programme is designed for the children and heirs of ultra-high-net-worth clients aged between 23 and 30. It aims to equip participants with the skills and confidence needed to navigate family succession, governance and the responsibilities of managing inherited wealth.
The six-week online course has been developed in collaboration with family enterprise specialists from MIT Sloan Executive Education and HSBC Private Bank. Its curriculum covers family business dynamics, developing an owner mindset, maintaining family unity, managing difficult conversations and establishing a pathway towards future leadership.
The first international cohort will begin the programme on 3 November and complete six modules before the course concludes on 8 December.
The launch comes as wealthy families prepare for one of the largest transfers of private wealth in history. An estimated $83.5 trillion is expected to pass to the next generation over the coming decades, increasing the importance of succession planning and preparing heirs for the demands of leadership.
HSBC Private Bank’s new digital course forms part of its wider Family Leaders programme, which supports families through wealth transitions and helps younger generations develop the capabilities required to preserve and grow family enterprises.

The bank is also expanding its in-person offering. In May, more than 60 clients attended its annual Future Family Leaders Forum in Athens, with further regional forums planned later this year to address local market needs and opportunities.
Ida Liu, CEO of HSBC Private Bank, said wealth transfers could fall short when the next generation inherits businesses and assets without the necessary leadership skills. “Our clients consistently tell us they want their children to gain experience managing the demands before the transition, not after it,” Liu said. She added that the programme would help participants develop the technical capabilities and confidence required to navigate the family discussions that underpin successful succession.
John Davis, senior lecturer in family enterprise at MIT Sloan School of Management, said the collaboration draws on decades of research and practical experience working with family businesses, family offices and their social impact activities. The programme is intended to translate that expertise into an accessible learning experience for emerging family leaders, helping them develop the insights and practices needed to support long-term performance.
For wealthy families, succession increasingly involves more than transferring ownership of assets. Preparing heirs to manage complex businesses, navigate differing family interests and make decisions across generations has become a central challenge. By combining family governance expertise with academic research, HSBC Private Bank is seeking to give younger family members an opportunity to develop those skills before they assume greater responsibility.
The initiative reflects a broader focus among private banks on supporting clients beyond investment management, as families seek guidance on governance, intergenerational relationships and the long-term stewardship of their wealth. The Future Family Leaders Digital Programme positions HSBC Private Bank and MIT Sloan as partners helping the next generation build the capabilities required for sustained family enterprise success.
