Japanese Firms Adopt Strategies To Retain College Graduates

    • Rising early resignations among new hires prompt companies to adopt strategies for retention and employee satisfaction.
    • Tools like the Geppo app track employee health, enabling proactive interventions and reducing young staff attrition.
    • Allowing recruits to choose locations or departments aligns roles with employee preferences, boosting engagement and long-term retention.

Japanese businesses are worried about the high rate of turnover of new graduates, with numerous leaving their workplace after a few years. As a reaction, companies are adopting new measures to help retain employees and tackle the reasons for early resignations.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported that 34.9% of college graduates who joined the job market in the spring of 2021 quit their jobs within three years, an increase of 2.6 percentage points over the previous year. A Staff Service Holdings survey exposed the most frequent causes of early departure as 'poor boss or colleague relationships' (26.3%) and 'the wrong company culture' (26.1%). These statistics emphasize the need to create positive company cultures and supportive management for youth retention.

In order to meet these challenges, however, some firms are using such tools as the Geppo app, created by Recruit Co., to track the health of workers. Nitto Denko, a maker of electric parts and materials, began using the app in 2019 for employees through their third year of employment. The app asks workers to evaluate their health on five levels in three categories on a monthly basis.

The human resources department gets the report, which is measured and warrants one-on-one sessions if the figures worsen. A Nitto Denko HR official stated that the app has caused the company to have open discourse with its employees, resulting in an enormous drop in young staff resignation rates.

Companies are also providing greater flexibility in job assignments. Instead of following the conventional routine where job assignments are decided by the company, certain companies are enabling the fresh recruits to apply for a precise location or department of their choice. This method is used to map employee desires with the job assignments, which could lead to greater job satisfaction and fewer turnovers.

These efforts indicate a wider movement in Japanese business culture towards prioritizing the well-being of employees and work-life balance. Through the use of technology and more flexible approaches, firms aim to build environments where young professionals will be appreciated and supported, helping to drive retention and build long-term success.
