In a historic step towards international academic cooperation, Jagannath Barooah College of Jorhat (JBC), upgraded recently to Jagannath Barooah University under Assam Act No. LXVI of 2023, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Taiwan's highly ranked National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU). The move represents an important step towards advanced research and educational cooperation between the two universities.

The MoU was inked on behalf of the college by Dr Utpal Jyoti Mahanta, Principal of JBC, with Professor (Dr) Shun-Hua Wei, Senior Vice-President of NYCU, and Professor (Dr) Chun-Li Lin, Dean of the College of Biomedical Engineering, NYCU. Porag Sarma, Coordinator of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at JBC, and Professor (Dr) Wen-Chuan Kuo, Director of the Institute of Biophotonics, NYCU, signed as the official witnesses of the MoU. The process of MoU was coordinated by Dr Ankur Gogoi, Assistant Professor in JBC’s Department of Physics and Dr Guan-Yu Zhuo, Associate Professor in NYCU’s Institute of Biophotonics. Dr Ankur Gogoi was sent by the college administration to deliver the duly signed MoU of Jagannath Barooah College to the NYCU authorities during his academic trip to Taipei, where he visited the Focus on Microscopy 2025 Conference to deliver his research work.

NYCU's Prof Chun-Li Lin and JBC's Dr Ankur Gogoi have been named liaison officers to facilitate smooth and effective implementation of the agreement, which is aimed at collaborative research in nonlinear optical microscopy and biophotonics.

The cooperation is of particular significance to NYCU's international reputation. 219th globally, 47th in Asia, and 4th in Taiwan as of the 2025 QS World University Rankings, NYCU boasts more than 22,000 students, 7 national laboratories, and 75 research centers, cementing its role as a pioneering institution in the field of science and technology.

The MoU defines major areas of cooperation such as mutual study tours, student and faculty exchange programmes, collaborative development projects, and mutual organization of academic courses, conferences, and symposia. It also includes the exchange of scientific materials and joint publication of research, leaving scope for other mutually useful activities.

College officials have indicated hope that this alliance would further expand the global presence of JBC and introduce the students and members of faculty to state-of-the-art research opportunities
