Sri Lanka to Digitally Upgrade 500 Schools with $20 Million Chinese Grant

    • China to fund US$ 20 million for digital transformation of 500 selected schools in Sri Lanka, each equipped with at least one smart classroom.
    • Infrastructure upgrades include a Network Operations Management Unit, Program Operations Room, and Conference Room at the Ministry of Education's Isurupaya premises.
    • The initiative was approved by the Cabinet following President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s January 2025 visit to China, marking a major step in modernizing Sri Lanka’s education system.

In a landmark move to modernize its education sector, Sri Lanka’s Cabinet has approved a US$ 20 million digital transformation initiative funded by the People’s Republic of China. The project aims to equip 500 selected schools across the country with essential digital infrastructure and at least one model smart classroom per school.

The agreement was finalized during President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s official visit to China in January 2025, where both nations committed to accelerating the program’s implementation.

The comprehensive plan not only includes advanced digital tools for schools but also the establishment of a Network Operations Management Unit, a Program Operations Room, and a Conference Room at Isurupaya the Ministry of Education’s headquarters. These centralized facilities will help oversee and manage the nationwide rollout.

The proposal was presented by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, who also serves as Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, and received formal Cabinet approval earlier this week.

This initiative represents a major leap forward in Sri Lanka’s efforts to enhance digital learning and foster innovation in classrooms. By integrating modern technology into its education system, the country is positioning its younger generation for success in an increasingly digital world.
