UMass Dartmouth is launching a transformative, campus-wide career development initiative that integrates career readiness directly into the academic experience for every student, across all majors. Moving beyond the traditional model of career support as a separate service, the university is embedding career exploration, professional skill-building, and experiential learning into coursework, co-curricular activities, and faculty-led instruction, making career preparation a core component of a student’s education.
"Our responsibility is to help students understand who they are and how they want to move through the world. A career isn't just a destination. It's a journey of discovery, growth, and adaptation", says Provost Ramprasad Balasubramanian.
The new framework, shaped by faculty and campus leaders and approved unanimously by the Faculty Senate, is guided by five Career Learning Outcomes. By the time students graduate, they will be able to articulate their interests, values, and strengths, explore academic majors and career paths, develop flexible career plans, build professional networks, and participate in hands-on experiences connecting classroom learning with real-world opportunities.

Supported by a planning grant from the Davis Educational Foundation, the initiative focuses on reflection, exploration, adaptability, and experiential learning skills increasingly valued by employers. Faculty are beginning to update curricula and add classroom activities designed to help students build practical skills, confidence, and the adaptability needed to navigate a rapidly changing job market.
Research from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities highlights that integrated career advising and preparation improve graduates’ career mobility over the decade following college. UMass Dartmouth’s approach supports students with clear career goals as well as those still exploring options, equipping all students to stay nimble as opportunities and aspirations evolve.
"Students today will likely change roles, fields, and even industries multiple times. What matters most is that they know how to reflect, learn, adapt, and communicate", Balasubramanian adds. This bold initiative positions UMass Dartmouth as a leader in embedding career readiness in higher education, ensuring graduates leave with both knowledge and the skills to thrive in a dynamic world.
