Synopsis
Wonju City has launched a semiconductor training course linked to recruitment opportunities, aiming to develop industry-ready talent for the growing chip sector. The program combines specialized education with employment pathways, helping participants gain relevant technical skills while supporting workforce needs and regional semiconductor industry growth.
A new workforce development initiative aimed at strengthening the regional semiconductor industry and creating meaningful career opportunities for local residents has officially begun in South Korea. On June 4, Wonju City, Korea Polytechnic University Wonju Campus, and semiconductor materials and components manufacturer DS Techno Co., Ltd. held the entrance ceremony for the Semiconductor Company Recruitment-Linked Course, a specialized education and employment program designed to connect skilled talent directly with industry hiring needs.
The ceremony took place at the Industry-Academia Cooperation Hall of Korea Polytechnic University Wonju Campus and marked the start of a training program that combines technical education with direct employment opportunities. The initiative reflects a growing effort by local governments, educational institutions, and private companies to work together in addressing workforce shortages while creating sustainable career pathways in one of the world's fastest-growing industries.
Among those attending the ceremony were key representatives from the participating organizations, including Lee Byungcheol, Director of Economic Affairs at Wonju City, Kwon Minsu, Dean of Korea Polytechnic University Wonju Campus, and Kim Hyunsoo, Vice President of DS Techno Co., Ltd. They were joined by university officials, company representatives, and the 20 trainees selected for the program.
Interest in the training course was exceptionally strong, highlighting the increasing demand for careers in the semiconductor industry. A total of 82 applicants competed for a place in the program, but only 20 candidates were selected after a competitive interview process. Those chosen will participate in an intensive seven-week curriculum focused on semiconductor component processing, receiving industry-specific education from June 4 through July 16.
The program is particularly noteworthy because it goes beyond traditional classroom instruction. Rather than focusing solely on theoretical concepts, the recruitment-linked training course is designed to provide participants with practical skills that can be immediately applied in semiconductor manufacturing environments. Students will gain knowledge of production processes, component fabrication, quality management, and advanced manufacturing techniques that are increasingly in demand across the global technology sector.
One of the most attractive aspects of the initiative is that the training is offered entirely free of charge. This removes financial barriers that often prevent job seekers from accessing specialized technical education. Additionally, individuals currently receiving unemployment benefits can participate in the course while having their attendance recognized as an official job-search activity, allowing them to continue receiving support while upgrading their skills and preparing for employment.

The strongest incentive for many participants, however, is the direct connection to employment opportunities. Graduates of the course will receive priority consideration for hiring at DS Techno Co., Ltd., creating a clear pathway from training to employment. The effectiveness of this model has already been demonstrated through previous program results. Last year, all 19 graduates who completed the recruitment-linked course successfully secured jobs within the semiconductor sector, achieving a remarkable 100% employment outcome.
The partnership also highlights the growing importance of DS Techno Co., Ltd. within the global semiconductor supply chain. Headquartered in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, the company specializes in manufacturing advanced semiconductor materials and components. It is currently the only company in South Korea capable of producing all three major semiconductor component materials—carbide (SiC), silicon (Si), and quartz. Its products are supplied to major technology companies, including Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Intel, making it an important contributor to both domestic and international semiconductor manufacturing.
The company's newly operational Munmak facility, which began operations earlier this year, focuses primarily on producing silicon components and is expected to play a significant role in supporting industry growth in the region. As demand for semiconductors continues to expand globally, facilities such as this require a steady pipeline of highly trained workers, making programs like the Semiconductor Company Recruitment-Linked Course increasingly valuable.
According to a Wonju City official, the initiative is expected to help reduce the outflow of young talent from the region while attracting new residents seeking career opportunities in advanced manufacturing. City leaders believe that connecting local education with high-quality employment opportunities can create a sustainable cycle of economic growth, strengthen the regional workforce, and support the long-term development of the local economy. Officials emphasized that they will continue working closely with industry partners to ensure businesses have access to skilled professionals while providing residents with pathways to rewarding careers in the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry.
