Alpro & AstraZeneca Launch Kidney Health Education Campaign

  • Alpro Group, in collaboration with AstraZeneca Malaysia, has launched the nationwide #AreYourKidneysOK+? initiative to expand access to subsidised blood screening, public education, and pharmacist support for 12,550 Malaysians. The campaign aims to strengthen early detection and raise awareness of health risks across the Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic spectrum, with a particular focus on hyperkalemia, an often-overlooked complication linked to chronic kidney disease.

Chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease continue to affect a significant portion of the Malaysian population. These conditions are closely interconnected, meaning a problem in one area of health can increase risks in others. Many people remain unaware of these links until their condition has advanced or complications have developed. Hyperkalemia, characterised by elevated potassium levels in the blood, is more common among individuals with chronic kidney disease because impaired kidneys may struggle to remove excess potassium. The condition often presents few noticeable warning signs yet can lead to serious heart rhythm complications if left unidentified and unmanaged.

Recognising the need for stronger early detection and public awareness, Alpro Group and AstraZeneca Malaysia introduced #AreYourKidneysOK+? as a dedicated nationwide effort. The campaign seeks to help Malaysians better understand the connections between heart, kidney, and metabolic health while drawing greater attention to hyperkalemia. At its core is a subsidised blood screening programme designed to encourage more people to take a proactive approach to their health. Eligible individuals can access reduced-cost blood test packages, lowering financial barriers and supporting earlier identification of potential risks.

The initiative targets 12,550 individuals across Malaysia, reflecting a shared commitment by both organisations to convert public health awareness into concrete action. Beyond financial support for screening, the campaign creates an accessible pathway for people to learn about possible health risks, undergo appropriate tests, and discuss next steps with healthcare professionals.

A dedicated digital health education platform supports the campaign by offering clear, trusted information on hyperkalemia, including its causes, risk factors, possible warning signs, and relationship with chronic kidney disease. Malaysians can access this resource at any time to prepare for more informed conversations with pharmacists, doctors, and other healthcare providers.

Through Alpro Group’s extensive community pharmacy network, members of the public also gain easier access to professional pharmacist guidance. Alpro pharmacists can help individuals understand the importance of screening, recognise relevant risk factors, and seek appropriate medical assessment or follow-up when needed.

Dr. Ng Ming Lee, Medical Director of Alpro Clinic, said many chronic health risks develop quietly and may only be discovered after complications have already occurred. Through this campaign, the organisations aim to make preventive healthcare more accessible by linking public education, affordable screening, and professional support. By reaching 12,550 Malaysians, they hope to encourage more people to take earlier and more proactive steps toward understanding their heart, kidney, and metabolic health.

Dr. Svetlana Yanchuk, Country President of AstraZeneca Malaysia, noted that chronic kidney disease remains a significant public health challenge in the country. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment across the healthcare ecosystem to strengthen public awareness of kidney health and bring education closer to the community. Through Alpro Group’s nationwide network, more Malaysians can learn about relevant risk factors and hold informed discussions with healthcare professionals to support timely assessment and follow-up.

The partnership reaffirms both organisations’ dedication to advancing preventive healthcare by combining greater public awareness, accessible screening, and professional guidance. It also highlights the valuable role community pharmacies can play in broader public health efforts, offering convenient access to education, early screening opportunities, and trusted advice within local communities.
