    • BayCare’s Graduate Medical Education program fills 100% of residency positions for the second year, nearly doubling program size.
    • In July, 194 new residents will join, bringing total residents to over 400, with many staying in West Central Florida to serve locally.
    • Program offers 14 residency and 3 university-sponsored programs, aiming to expand to 650 residents by 2029, enhancing regional healthcare access.

For the second consecutive year, BayCare’s Graduate Medical Education program has achieved a major milestone by filling 100% of its open residency positions during Match Day on March 20, nearly doubling the program’s size. This success reflects BayCare’s growing reputation as one of the fastest-expanding academic health systems in the nation and highlights its commitment to cultivating the next generation of physicians to serve West Central Florida.

This July, BayCare will welcome 194 new residents, bringing the total number of residents to over 400. Chief Physician Executive Dr. Sowmya Viswanathan emphasized that achieving a complete match underscores the quality and appeal of the program. Prospective residents are drawn to BayCare’s network of exceptional teaching physicians and the breadth of experience offered across the region’s largest integrated health system. Remarkably, more than 60% of program graduates who do not pursue additional training remain in the area, beginning their careers at BayCare Medical Group clinics and hospitals.

Research by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) shows that over half of physicians who complete residency training continue to practice in the state where they trained, highlighting the long-term impact of programs like BayCare’s on local healthcare access. Many of this year’s incoming residents are Floridians or completed their medical education in the state, reinforcing BayCare’s mission to support the regional healthcare workforce. The program aims to expand to over 650 residents by 2029.

BayCare currently offers 14 residency programs and three university-sponsored programs across fields including emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and transitional year training. Each year, Match Day, organized by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the AAMC, pairs fourth-year medical students with residency programs through a structured system based on mutual preference.

By filling all positions and continuing to grow its Graduate Medical Education program, BayCare is not only training highly skilled physicians but also strengthening patient access to quality care in the region, demonstrating the lasting benefits of robust medical education and residency training.
