Gwynedd Mercy University Launches New Three-Year BSN Program

    • Gwynedd Mercy University will launch an accelerated three-year BSN program in Fall 2026, helping students enter nursing careers faster and save up to $29,000.
    • The program offers career opportunities, loan repayment options, and practical experience to address Pennsylvania’s projected shortage of over 20,000 nurses by 2026.
    • GMercyU also provides advanced nursing education tracks to prepare future nurse educators and leaders, strengthening the healthcare workforce.

Gwynedd Mercy University (GMercyU) is set to launch an accelerated three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program starting in Fall 2026, offering a faster, more cost-effective path for aspiring nurses to enter a workforce grappling with significant shortages. The new program is designed for highly skilled and compassionate students who are eager to begin their nursing careers sooner, while also reducing the financial burden typically associated with a traditional four-year degree. By completing the BSN in three years, students could save an estimated $29,000, making the program an attractive option for those focused on both career readiness and affordability.

In addition to the shorter timeline, students may benefit from GMercyU’s extensive nursing partnerships, which provide career opportunities and potential loan repayment options, with possible savings ranging from $25,000 to $40,000. With the average nursing salary in the Philadelphia area reaching $97,510, graduates can enter the workforce quickly, equipped with both practical experience and financial advantages.

The timing of this program is particularly significant given the persistent nursing shortage nationwide. According to the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), the state is projected to experience the most severe nursing shortage in the country by 2026, with an estimated need for 20,345 additional registered nurses to meet the demands of an aging population. Jane Tang, PhD, RN, NE-BC, Dean of the Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing and Health Professions, emphasized that the new track provides a “faster, more affordable way to earn a BSN degree while still enjoying a traditional undergraduate college experience”, while simultaneously addressing critical workforce gaps in Pennsylvania and beyond.

GMercyU has long invested in healthcare education, including the opening of the Frances M. Maguire ’55 Healthcare Innovation Center, the largest academic building on campus. The facility prepares students to meet both current and future healthcare challenges, emphasizing access, equity, and the development of highly competent professionals. Since Fall 2020, the university has graduated over 1,200 nursing students and continues to expand programs to meet workforce demands, including initiatives to cultivate the next generation of nurse educators.

Recognizing a nationwide shortage of nursing faculty with nearly 2,000 full-time faculty positions vacant among 922 nursing schools GMercyU also offers advanced programs to prepare nurses for teaching and leadership roles. These include the Master of Science in Nursing- Nurse Educator Track, the Post-Master's Certificate in Nursing Education, and the EdD in Teaching & Learning in Higher Education- Nurse Education, all of which are accepting applications for Fall 2026. These programs aim to strengthen the future nursing workforce by equipping experienced nurses with the skills to educate, mentor, and lead the next generation of healthcare professionals.

By offering accelerated undergraduate pathways alongside advanced nursing education programs, GMercyU continues to position itself as a leader in healthcare education, providing students with the tools, opportunities, and support needed to succeed in an evolving and critically important field.
