S3 Conference Launches Regional Healthcare Simulation Courses

    • Two new regional certification programmes Certified Educator and Certified Technologist in Healthcare Simulation launched at the S3 Conference in Singapore
    • Developed jointly by SingHealth Duke-NUS SIMS, PASSH, and MaSSH to standardize and advance simulation-based medical education across Southeast Asia
    • The programs, starting by end-2026, aim to equip healthcare professionals with global-standard skills in simulation pedagogy, technology, and patient safety

A significant move to enhance medical education in the Southeast Asia region was announced at the S3 Conference in Singapore, where the launching of two regional certification programmes in healthcare simulation was announced. These new programs, 'Certified Educator in Healthcare Simulation' and 'Certified Technologist in Healthcare Simulation', are designed to enhance professional competency and promote excellence in simulation-based learning; they provide state-of-the-art skills in simulation pedagogy, technology, and practice for healthcare professionals.

These programmes were launched in collaboration with the SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute of Medical Simulation (SIMS), the Pan Asia Simulation Society in Healthcare (PASSH), and the Malaysian Society for Simulation in Healthcare (MaSSH) to bring together leading institutions in the region that share a common vision of raising the standards of healthcare education and training by leveraging simulation technology.

The new certifications will seek to equip educators, clinicians, nurses, and technologists with the competencies to design, conduct, and manage quality simulation-based programs to enhance clinical competence and patient safety. Both certification tracks are scheduled to begin by the end of 2026 and will admit about 50 participants each in the first year. The programs address an emerging need for standardized, regionally-based training frameworks that reflect global best practices for healthcare simulation.

Conforming to a standardized model of certification and skill building, these programs will help ensure that simulation-based teaching across the Southeast Asia region meets consistent professional standards while continuing to respond to varied healthcare contexts.

The Certified Educator in Healthcare Simulation program will primarily serve educators in medicine and nursing looking to enhance their instructional design and debriefing skills using immersive simulation modalities. The Certified Technologist in Healthcare Simulation program will be centered on the operational and technical elements of simulation, offering specialized training in equipment management, scenario development, and technological integration in healthcare learning environments. Both programs will include modular training, mentorship, and assessment elements to assure competence in academic, clinical, and technical domains.

By launching these certifications at the S3 Conference, an international platform on simulation, safety, and sustainability in healthcare, the growing recognition of simulation as a cornerstone of modern medical education is underlined. Simulation allows healthcare professionals to practice key competencies in a safe and controlled environment, minimizing errors and encouraging better patient outcomes.

With these novel certifications, SingHealth Duke-NUS SIMS, PASSH, and MaSSH aim to establish a self-sustaining network of certified professionals who can champion simulation initiatives within hospitals, universities, and training centers across Southeast Asia. This will ultimately set higher standards for healthcare education, foster regional collaboration, and raise the competencies of the future workforce in providing safer and quality patient care.
