The launch ceremony at Sunway University was officiated by the Minister of Higher Education, Dato' Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, and witnessed by Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah, Sunway Group Founder and Chairman.

The opening of the Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School is undoubtedly a follow-up to the setting up of the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre (JCBC) in Cambridge, underlining Cheah's dedication to developing world-class education as well as providing biomedical research.
The climax of the opening was the 'White Coat Ceremony' for the first batch of medical students, who also administered the 'Hippocratic Oath', a symbolic and significant rite of passage to be officially welcomed as members of the medical fraternity.
