VFS Global has inaugurated its first Visa Application Centre in Assam, marking a significant expansion of visa services for applicants across Eastern and Northeastern India. The new facility, located at the Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Khanapara, Guwahati, aims to bring essential visa processing closer to residents of the region and reduce the need for long-distance travel to larger cities.
The centre was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with Tourism Minister Smt Ajanta Neog, Transport Minister Shri Charan Boro, and Yummi Talwar, Chief Operating Officer – South Asia at VFS Global. Representatives from the diplomatic missions of Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy and France also attended the event.
The 3,200-square-foot centre will serve applicants from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. It offers visa application services for 14 countries: Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malta (for D-Visa applications), Morocco, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
This development comes as demand for international travel continues to grow in the region, driven by rising interest in education abroad, business opportunities, tourism and global mobility. Improved local access to visa services is expected to make the process more convenient for students, professionals and travellers who previously had to travel to centres in Kolkata or Bhubaneswar.
Yummi Talwar highlighted the importance of the new centre for the region. “We are pleased to inaugurate our new Visa Application Centre in Guwahati, strengthening access to visa services for applicants across Assam and the wider Northeast. With growing aspirations around education, business, tourism and global mobility, reliable access to visa services is central to turning ambition into opportunity. Through secure, technology-led processes and a commitment to service excellence, we will continue to offer an efficient and convenient visa application experience and make international travel simpler for every applicant we serve.”
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma described the inauguration as a meaningful step for the Northeast. “The inauguration of this visa application centre is an important step in strengthening connections, creating opportunities for our young people, supporting businesses and welcoming visitors from across the world. It represents progress towards a more connected, accessible and opportunity-driven Northeast.”
The Guwahati centre forms part of a wider regional network that includes VFS Global’s existing operations in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. By locating services in Guwahati, which offers strong air, rail and road connectivity, the company aims to improve accessibility for applicants from across the eight northeastern states and Sikkim.
The launch also reflects broader trends in regional infrastructure development that support international engagement. Bringing visa services closer to applicants is expected to reduce logistical barriers, lower travel costs and time for applicants, and support the region’s increasing participation in global education, trade and tourism.

VFS Global is marking its 25th anniversary. The company currently provides visa services on behalf of 53 sovereign governments through 561 Visa Application Centres across 20 cities in India. The addition of the Guwahati centre continues its efforts to expand access to international mobility services across the country.
For students and young professionals in the Northeast, the new centre is particularly relevant. Many applicants from the region seek visas for higher education, short-term courses, research programmes and professional training in Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan and other destinations covered by the centre. Local access is expected to simplify the application process and encourage more applicants to pursue international opportunities without the added burden of travelling to distant cities for biometrics or document submission.
Business travellers and entrepreneurs from the region will also benefit. As trade and investment links between the Northeast and overseas markets grow, easier access to visa services can support business meetings, exhibitions, training programmes and market exploration. Tourism-related travel is another key area, with the centre facilitating applications for leisure and cultural visits.
The facility uses VFS Global’s standard technology-led processes designed to deliver secure and efficient service. Applicants can expect the same standards of process integrity, appointment systems and customer service that the company maintains at its other centres in India.
By establishing a dedicated centre in Guwahati, VFS Global addresses a long-standing gap in regional access. Applicants from remote areas of the Northeast who previously faced significant travel requirements to reach Kolkata or other centres now have a more practical option closer to home. This is expected to increase overall application volumes from the region over time as awareness grows and processes become more familiar.
The inauguration forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen connectivity and opportunity in the Northeast. Local leadership has emphasised the role of such infrastructure in supporting education, employment and economic growth. The presence of diplomatic representatives at the opening underscores the interest of partner countries in facilitating legitimate travel from the region.
As international mobility continues to expand, the Guwahati Visa Application Centre positions the Northeast more effectively within India’s broader visa services network. It offers a practical response to rising demand while supporting the aspirations of students, professionals and travellers who see global opportunities as increasingly accessible.
The centre is now operational and ready to accept applications for the listed countries, providing a new local gateway for outbound travel from Assam and the wider Northeast.
