This year, as many as 36.5 percent of Hong Kong's secondary school leavers managed to get into local universities or diploma courses under the city's central Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) scheme. Over 43,200 students have applied under the JUPAS scheme, and 15,808 of them have secured offers of tertiary places, data released today showed. Interestingly, as many as 83 percent of the successful applicants were given offers within their first three program preferences.
Among the city's best schools, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was the top pick among high achievers, taking in seven of this year's top-performing Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examinees. They were among the 'top scorers' who had one student with the maximum possible 5 grade in eight subjects, four with 5 in seven subjects, and two with 5 in six subjects.
The seven will join CUHK's elite Medicine Program via the Global Physician-Leadership Stream. Under Hong Kong's grading system, the top 10 percent of students who earn the 5 grade are given a 5 and those who have at least 5 in six subjects three core and three electives are classified as 'top scorers'.

The Hong Kong University (HKU) too had a good batch, inducting five high scorers and over 60 students with 5 scores in four or more subjects. A large number of them will study medicine, business administration, and data science. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) accepted three top performers who will study programs such as international research enrichment and quantitative finance. One high-achiever student who had achieved top scorer in last year's HKDSE also reapplied via JUPAS this year to pursue its Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance program.
Apart from the publicly funded institutions, 4,904 students got subsidized places in designated first-year-first-degree courses provided by eight self-financing universities, such as The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Chu Hai College.
