Anwar Calls for Thorough Education Reforms Before the 13th Malaysia Plan

  • Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need to adopt drastic and thorough reforms in crafting Malaysia's new education master plan in readiness for the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

In a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, the Prime Minister said that the current policies must be re-examined and refreshed to ensure that every ringgit spent through the 13MP will contribute towards a more just, progressive, and sustainable education system that ultimately gives birth to a more prosperous and harmonious future for the country.

Earlier, Anwar had met with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and top officials of the ministry to discuss fresh strategies and directions for education.

Some of the main issues that were discussed were preschool education, teacher training and capacity building in teacher education institutions, the application of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to empower teachers, and the bolstering of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to promote future competitiveness.

They also touched on matters concerning Form Six and matriculation studies, student dropouts, teaching permits for the public and private sectors, and reorganizing the National Education Master Plan to suit present needs.

Anwar wished for the speedy enactment of the suggested reforms to cater to the students, teachers, and the educational system of Malaysia. "The world is evolving very fast, and we cannot be complacent, being locked in nostalgia for the past or tied down by dated blueprints which perhaps are no longer applicable," he said. - Bernama
