    • The MEXT Scholarship 2027 intake has opened, offering fully funded postgraduate study opportunities in Japan for international students.
    • The program is highly competitive, with around 3,170 applicants for 50 seats in the previous cycle, and requires applicants to submit a research plan and secure a Japanese university supervisor.
    • Covering Master’s and PhD programs, it includes tuition, stipend, language training, and airfare, aiming to develop global researchers and academic leaders through Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Japan) support.

The MEXT Scholarship 2027 has officially opened applications for international students, offering a highly competitive pathway to pursue postgraduate studies in Japan at leading Japanese universities under a fully funded academic program supported by the Government of Japan.

The application window for the 'Research Students' category will close on May 15, 2026, and early indications suggest another intensely competitive cycle. In the previous intake, the Embassy of Japan in India received nearly 3,170 applications for just about 50 available seats, underscoring the scholarship’s global demand and elite selection standards.

Selected scholars will begin their academic journey in Japan in April, September, or October 2027, depending on university placement and program structure. The scholarship covers two main postgraduate tracks, including a two-year Master’s program and a three-year Doctoral program, both designed with a strong emphasis on academic research and independent study.

A unique requirement of the program is its strong focus on research alignment. Applicants must independently identify a prospective academic supervisor at a Japanese university and submit a detailed academic research plan that aligns closely with the professor’s specialization. This requirement ensures that candidates are prepared for Japan’s research-driven higher education system.

For students requiring language preparation, the scholarship also offers a six-month Japanese language training course before the start of the main academic program, helping scholars transition smoothly into academic and cultural life in Japan.

Financially, the fully funded scholarship is one of the most comprehensive globally. Doctoral students receive a monthly stipend of approximately 145,000 Japanese Yen (around Rs 85,300), along with full coverage of tuition, entrance exam fees, and graduation costs. The program also includes round-trip airfare, making it a complete education funding opportunity for deserving candidates.

An embassy spokesperson highlighted the program’s long-term vision, stating, “The MEXT Scholarship is designed not only to support academic excellence but also to build future global leaders who can contribute to international knowledge exchange and innovation through advanced research”.

With its strong focus on global scholarships, research excellence, and cross-cultural academic exposure, the MEXT Scholarship continues to stand as one of the most prestigious study in Japan opportunities for aspiring scholars worldwide.
