    • Facility aims to deepen national history understanding and patriotic sentiment among Hong Kong and Macau students
    • Chan highlights war history as powerful patriotic education material, encouraging youth to contribute to China’s 'great rejuvenation'

Hong Kong’s Chief Secretary Eric Chan said on Thursday that the opening of a new patriotic education base in Beijing marks a significant step forward in strengthening national education for students from Hong Kong and Macau.

The base is located inside the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, which stands near the Marco Polo Bridge, the site where Japan launched its full-scale invasion of China in 1937. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chan expressed gratitude to the central government for its long-standing support in helping the Hong Kong SAR promote patriotic education.

He said the new facility would serve as an important platform for young people from Hong Kong and Macau to better understand national history and to foster a deeper sense of patriotism. “The history of the war of resistance is the most vivid kind of patriotic education material”, Chan said in his speech. “I strongly believe and hope that everyone who visits the museum and the patriotic education base, especially students and teachers from Hong Kong, will experience first-hand the awakening of patriotic sentiment”.

Chan added that he hopes visitors will not only reflect on the struggles of the past but also draw inspiration and strength from them. He said this kind of experience could encourage young people to contribute to the 'great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation'.

The Chief Secretary also noted that he looks forward to seeing more patriotic education facilities being set up across China in the future. He believes such initiatives would further strengthen the national and ethnic identities of young people from both Hong Kong and Macau, ensuring they feel more connected to the country’s history and future.

By situating the base at a historic site of immense national significance, officials hope to give students a tangible link to the past and a deeper appreciation of the sacrifices made during the war of resistance. Chan said he believes this connection will make national education more meaningful for younger generations and will help instill in them a stronger sense of pride in their Chinese identity.
