Damascus University has officially announced the opening of applications for the prestigious Japanese Government Scholarship Program MEXT 2027 for international research students, creating new academic opportunities for Syrian and Arab students seeking higher education in Japan. The scholarship initiative is funded by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, widely recognized for supporting international academic exchange and advanced research collaboration. University officials confirmed that applications for the fully supported postgraduate program will remain open until May 25, drawing significant interest from students aiming to pursue research and graduate studies at leading Japanese universities.
The announcement comes amid growing educational cooperation between Syria and Japan, with both countries exploring broader academic partnerships and research exchanges. During recent discussions, Damascus University President Mustafa Saem al-Dahr met with Akihiro Tsuji, the chargé d’affaires of the Japanese Embassy in Damascus, to discuss opportunities for strengthening bilateral educational ties. The talks focused on expanding scientific collaboration, organizing academic visits, and creating pathways for Syrian students and professors to engage directly with Japanese academic institutions and research centers.
The MEXT Scholarship Program is considered one of the most competitive international scholarship opportunities available to foreign students, offering funding for postgraduate education, research training, and academic specialization in Japan. The initiative aims to attract talented students from across the world while promoting cultural exchange, scientific advancement, and international cooperation through higher education. For Syrian applicants, the program represents a rare opportunity to access advanced academic resources, global research networks, and internationally recognized Japanese universities at a time when overseas educational opportunities remain limited.
According to the Japanese Embassy in Syria, eligibility requirements for the scholarship include Syrian nationality, a bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative average of 70%, and proficiency in either English or Japanese. Applicants must also be under the age of 35 and provide official documentation verifying their identity and nationality, including translated copies of passports or identification cards. The embassy confirmed that candidates who successfully pass the initial document screening process will be invited to sit for a written examination at the Embassy of Japan in Syria before advancing to interview stages later in the selection process.

Officials stated that only shortlisted applicants will receive additional details regarding the written exams and interviews, with notifications expected by the end of June 2026. The embassy also noted that the scholarship selection process could be suspended or canceled depending on evolving internal or external conditions affecting Syria. Despite those uncertainties, the announcement has generated optimism among students and researchers who view international scholarships as an important gateway to academic development and global educational exposure.
In parallel with the Japanese scholarship announcement, Damascus University also highlighted new opportunities under the ERASMUS+ academic mobility program in cooperation with the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED). The partial scholarships are available for academic master’s and doctoral students seeking one-semester study opportunities at Italian universities during the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year. The program includes placements at the University of Rome for International Studies and the University of Calabria, covering fields such as literature, economics, political science, and education.
University officials explained that doctoral candidates applying for the Italian grants must have completed at least one academic year since registration, while master’s students must already be in the research preparation stage of their studies. These international academic mobility programs are part of broader efforts to strengthen Syria’s engagement with global higher education institutions and expand research collaboration opportunities for students and faculty members. The combined availability of the MEXT Scholarship Program and ERASMUS+ grants signals a growing emphasis on international educational partnerships aimed at supporting academic excellence, research innovation, and cross-cultural exchange for Syrian students.
