Ghana and China have signed a $30 million grant agreement to construct a new university in Damongo, aimed at enhancing higher education, skill development, and employment opportunities in the region. The agreement was finalized during a meeting between Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and outgoing Chinese Ambassador H.E. Tong Defa.

Dr. Forson thanked Ambassador Tong on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for his contributions to strengthening bilateral relations. He noted that the grant is part of broader Chinese support to Ghana, including funding for a multipurpose market in Aflao, and reaffirmed the long-standing ties between the two countries dating back to the era of President Kwame Nkrumah and Chairman Mao.

The Finance Minister emphasized the importance of deepening economic and educational cooperation, suggesting discussions on settling trade in local currencies to reduce exchange losses. He highlighted that policy-level engagement with the Bank of Ghana would follow to explore these initiatives.
