- Plans to establish international research bases in the UK, Japan, and the US to strengthen global academic collaboration
- Focuses on expanding PhD programs, advancing high-impact research, and building future-ready skills aligned with emerging technologies
- Aims to broaden its presence across India, creating new opportunities for academic talent, research roles, and innovation-led education
TCG Crest University, a research-focused deemed university backed by The Chatterjee Group (TCG), has announced plans to expand globally while strengthening its footprint across India. Headquartered in Kolkata, the university aims to establish international bases in the UK, Japan, and the US, alongside new centers in southern, western, and northern India over the coming years.
Chancellor Purnendu Chatterjee said, the goal is to build a new-age global research university that bridges the gap between traditional academic institutions and profit-driven corporate research labs. He noted that TCG Crest is designed to enable large-scale, meaningful research without being constrained by legacy systems or short-term commercial pressures.
Founded in 2020 as a Section 8 not-for-profit institution, TCG Crest follows a research-first model. Unlike conventional universities, it began with PhD programs before introducing master’s courses, placing advanced research at the core of its academic structure. The university currently hosts around 150 PhD scholars and plans to scale this number to nearly 1,000 over time, creating significant opportunities for faculty, researchers, and academic professionals.

As part of its overseas plans, TCG Crest is targeting a UK launch by 2026, with an initial focus on artificial intelligence in healthcare. The university believes this area offers strong global demand and high societal impact, while also opening pathways for skill development and international collaboration. Other frontier areas, including quantum technologies, may follow.
In India, the university plans to expand beyond eastern regions and establish new research centers nationwide. Leaders emphasized that growth will be organic and talent-driven, guided by the ability to attract high-quality researchers rather than fixed investment targets.
