Global South Universities Unite Through China's Trop-Learn Education

  • Synopsis
China has launched the Tropi-Learn Platform in Hainan to connect universities across tropical regions and improve access to digital education, research collaboration, and skill development. The initiative aims to strengthen academic cooperation among countries in the Global South through shared learning and technology-driven education systems.

China has launched a new digital education platform designed to connect universities across tropical regions and improve academic collaboration, research partnerships, and skill development opportunities among countries in the Global South.

The platform, called Tropi-Learn, was officially unveiled during the 2026 Summit of the League of Tropical Universities held in Haikou, located in China’s southern Hainan Province. The university alliance currently includes 121 institutions from more than 50 countries and regions.

The initiative aims to strengthen educational connectivity between universities in tropical and developing regions by creating easier access to academic resources, online learning, research partnerships, and cross-border educational programs.

Hainan University is leading the development of the platform and will provide the technological infrastructure needed to support digital cooperation between member institutions. Luo Qingming, president of Hainan University, said the platform is designed to improve educational equity and expand access to learning opportunities across regions that often face similar economic and development challenges.

According to Luo, the next phase of the platform will introduce several collaborative features, including mutual recognition of academic credits, cross-university course enrollment, and joint research initiatives. These efforts are expected to benefit both students and faculty members by allowing broader access to educational content and international academic networks.

The platform also reflects a growing global trend toward digital learning and international academic partnerships, especially among developing nations looking to improve higher education systems and workforce readiness. During the summit, Kenneth Kamwi Matengu, president of the Association of African Universities, said tropical countries often face similar development issues, making educational collaboration increasingly important.

He noted that the alliance goes beyond simply exchanging ideas and is now focused on building practical solutions and institutional capacity through digital education tools and research cooperation. “This collaboration is helping universities address regional challenges together while improving access to knowledge and innovation”, Matengu said during the event.

As the newly appointed rotating chair of the alliance, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS emphasized the importance of turning international academic partnerships into practical outcomes that support education, employment, and sustainable development. Mohamed Firouz Asnan, president of the university, said aligning research priorities among member institutions could improve efficiency, strengthen innovation, and encourage better sharing of academic resources.

Education experts attending the summit said the launch of Tropi-Learn highlights the increasing role of South-South cooperation in science, technology, and higher education. They added that digital platforms like this could help universities improve skill development, research quality, and international academic mobility in emerging economies.

The initiative is also expected to create new opportunities for students in tropical regions by expanding access to specialized courses, collaborative research programs, and global academic networks without requiring large-scale physical infrastructure. As digital education continues to grow worldwide, the Tropi-Learn Platform could become an important model for international academic cooperation among developing countries seeking long-term educational and economic growth.
