Hanyang University opened its first international alumni association in Malaysia, in Kuala Lumpur, marking a major milestone in its international outreach. This move not only opens the window for better and more organized overseas networks of graduates for Hanyang University but also makes it the first Korean university to establish such an organization in Malaysia.
This decision comes after the university successfully created an international alumni association in China as part of its expanded activities to systematically attract international students and enhance its global alumni interaction. The launch ceremony was attended by about 140 participants, including Hanyang University President Lee Ki-jeong, university officials, Malaysian graduates of Hanyang, Korean alumni living in Malaysia, and current students.
Since the 1980s, the university has been aggressively recruiting high-achieving Malaysian students through combinations of government scholarships and its own financial aid programs. In the past three decades, over 400 Malaysian students have graduated from Hanyang, a testament to the university's long-lasting contributions to international education.
Hanyang University said that establishing an alumni association based in Malaysia means the international exchange of several decades has matured into a sustainable, locally rooted network. The association plans to offer more opportunities for its alumni to get together through frequent gatherings, work-related lectures, mentorship programs, and campus visits. It also intends to expand sharing of opportunities for employment in cooperation with companies run by graduates of Hanyang University and carry out cooperative projects with local institutions to further enhance the international competitiveness of Hanyang University.

Scholarship programs and activities for social contribution targeted at Malaysian people will also be supported in order to integrate alumni activities more deeply with regional development. A highlight of the event was the introduction of a new scholarship offering 30 to 50 percent tuition reductions for undergraduate freshmen who are children of international alumni.
The move underlines Hanyang University's commitment to maintaining strong ties with its overseas alumni while encouraging the next generation of students to pursue education at the institution. This strategic expansion at Hanyang University aims to nurture a global community of alumni who are well-connected and can apply decades of international experience to strengthen educational and professional networks.
The Malaysia-based alumni association is set to become a hub for collaboration, mentoring, and community engagement, further consolidating Hanyang University's position as a globally connected institution that is offering richer opportunities for both Malaysian and Korean alumni to stay relevant with the university's growth and internationalized efforts.
