Indonesia Expands Skills Training for Migrant Workers

    • Indonesia boosts vocational training for migrant workers.
    • Govt teams up with youth groups to promote safe migration.
    • Emphasis on education to prevent trafficking and exploitation.

Indonesia is taking strong steps to enhance the skills and protection of its migrant workers by expanding vocational education and safe migration awareness programs. Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), Mukhtarudin, emphasized this during a recent meeting with leaders from the Indonesian Islamic Student Movement (PB PMII) in Jakarta.

"The future of our workforce depends on how well we train and protect them", Mukhtarudin said. "With the demographic bonus we have today, we must invest in producing a skilled, productive workforce".

To meet global job market needs, the government is intensifying vocational training and job readiness programs through job training centers across the country. These initiatives aim to make Indonesian migrant workers more competitive and prepared for overseas employment opportunities.

The Ministry is also developing the Golden Migrant Village ecosystem, a comprehensive program designed to ensure safe migration starting from local communities and continuing through to the workers’ return and reintegration. This includes support for returning migrants to become entrepreneurs.

Mukhtarudin stated that these steps align with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to prioritize not just the protection of migrant workers, but also their growth and education.

“We are committed to producing migrant workers who are not only protected but also skilled and forward thinking”, he said.

The ministry also aims to collaborate with student and youth organizations, such as PB PMII, to improve migration literacy and outreach at the grassroots level.

    M. Razik Ilham, Head of PMII’s Manpower Division, welcomed the move, noting that many young people, especially Gen Z, are still unaware of safe migration practices. He stressed that early education, training, and awareness can help prevent human trafficking and illegal job placements.

"With strong cooperation and youth involvement, we can create a safer and smarter path for Indonesian migrant workers", Ilham added.

Together, the Ministry and PMII plan to roll out training, education, and advocacy campaigns in both cities and rural communities, ensuring young Indonesians are better informed, better skilled, and better protected.
