Indonesia Explores Higher Education & Health Collaboration with Oxford

    • Indonesia explores academic and health collaboration with Oxford to strengthen higher education and research
    • Plans to build medical faculties and train skilled professionals across regions
    • Focus on research, jobs, and future-ready health skills

Indonesia is exploring a strategic partnership with the University of Oxford to strengthen higher education, research, and healthcare skills across the country. The talks reflect Indonesia’s push to build global academic links while developing a skilled workforce at home.

The discussions took place in Jakarta during a meeting between Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto and a delegation from Oxford. The proposed partnership aims to improve university education, expand research capacity, and support health technology development in Indonesia.

A key focus is the government’s plan to establish integrated medical faculties across multiple regions. These institutions would be linked to world-class teaching hospitals and are designed to improve access to healthcare, raise the quality of medical education, and reduce the need for Indonesians to seek treatment overseas. The initiative is also expected to create new academic, research, and healthcare jobs.

Oxford representatives welcomed the plan and expressed interest in supporting Indonesia’s long-term vision. Potential areas of collaboration include curriculum design, joint research projects, faculty and student exchanges, and training programs that build global skills.

The partnership may also cover priority areas such as vaccines, artificial intelligence in healthcare, disease diagnostics, health data systems, and infectious disease research, including tuberculosis. These areas align with Indonesia’s need for advanced skills and innovation in the health sector.

As a next step, both sides plan to form a joint working group to identify priorities and design programs for research, fellowships, and academic exchanges. The collaboration is expected to lay the foundation for a long-term Indonesia-Oxford partnership focused on education, skills, and future-ready healthcare.
