- Offers hands-on STEM experiences linked to halal industry practices.
- Builds future-ready skills and awareness of careers in halal and tech sectors.
- Expands Halal@STEM education nationwide to inspire more students.
Nestle Malaysia, in partnership with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has launched the Halal@STEM programme to engage secondary school students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through the lens of the halal industry. The initiative kicked off at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bukit Baru in Melaka, providing over 174 students with interactive sessions on practical applications of STEM in food and beverage manufacturing.
Developed with UPM’s Halal Products Research Centre, Halal@STEM demonstrates how scientific knowledge and technology ensure halal integrity across production processes. Students explored activities such as halal authentication under microscopes, AI-based product verification, mobile app development, water filtration, soap production, and nutritional panel calculations. These sessions made STEM concepts tangible while linking them directly to compliance, quality, and innovation.
“Beyond regulatory compliance, Nestle’s halal commitment is rooted in science, safety, and ethical responsibility. By integrating STEM with halal principles, we aim to inspire students to think critically and explore career opportunities in this growing sector”, said Nasrul Hadi Mohamed Nor, Head of Halal Affairs at Nestle Malaysia.

SMK Bukit Baru headmistress Nor Hafizah Musa highlighted the program’s impact on preparing students for future-ready careers. Participants like Hazin Irfan Mohd Norhakim shared that the initiative helped them understand how STEM applies to everyday life and food production, emphasizing nutrition, safety, and quality.
Following a successful pilot in Terengganu, Nestle Malaysia plans to expand Halal@STEM nationwide, equipping young Malaysians with practical skills and insights to explore careers in science, technology, and the halal industry.
