- It focused on culture-based learning and classroom innovation to enhance student engagement
Taiwan is strengthening education ties with the Philippines through a hands-on cultural training program designed for school teachers. Organized by the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) along with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines, the workshop took place in Manila.
The session, centered on the Dragon Boat Festival, brought together over 30 educators from different schools. It aimed to equip teachers with practical tools to make cultural education more engaging and interactive in classrooms.
The program blended lectures with activities, helping participants understand how to turn traditional knowledge into modern teaching methods. Teachers explored ways to combine storytelling, crafts, and real-life context to improve student learning and participation.
A key highlight was the focus on skill development. Educators learned how to design experiential lessons that go beyond textbooks. The training also introduced digital learning resources available on Taiwan-supported platforms, giving teachers access to free materials and videos for classroom use.
The workshop included a session on mugwort, a plant linked to the Dragon Boat Festival and known for its wellness benefits. Teachers not only learned about its cultural and medicinal value but also created a traditional mugwort massage tool. This hands-on activity showed how cultural practices can be turned into practical learning exercises.
